Primary objective
As a member of the school team and under the direction of the Principal and Business Manager, the Maintenance & Grounds
Officer is required to play a key role in ensuring the high standard of security, maintenance, safety and presentation associated
with the day-to-day physical conditions of the school.
Context statement
Kintore Street School is a specialist school in the Katherine region that caters for students with moderate and severe intellectual
and/or multiple physical impairment from Preschool to Year 12. The school provides individual programs to suit the academic,
educational, social, emotional, future employment and recreational needs of all our students. The whole school community
embraces the motto “Towards Independence.”
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Responsible for maintenance, chemical control, cleanliness and security associated with the physical condition of the school
grounds including regular mowing of lawns and weeding, irrigation, playgrounds, push bikes and maintenance of hydro-
pool/spa.
2. Regularly inspect and undertake general repairs and maintenance to school vehicles / school buildings that require technical,
general handyman skills as required. Carry out a range of tasks to make sure the school assets are in a safe and orderly
condition.
3. Action potential health and safety risks by immediately reporting or exercising judgement in resolving the problem.
4. Oversee the satisfactory completion of repairs referred to by outside contractors, including arranging outside contractors and
being point of reference for contractors.
5. Inspect and unlock the school premises each morning before start time. Report immediately any unusual activity e.g. vandalism,
break in etc.
6. Demonstrated competency in people management including budget control, minor purchasing, stock control and rostering.
7. Collection of stores, mail and provide a courier service as required. Receive, unpack, and distribute stores.
8. Assist with the preparation of school excursions, camps, sports days and other special events as required. Including driving of
school buses as required, of which may be outside of hours.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Relevant Trade qualification / demonstrated competence in a relevant trade area.
2. Demonstrated experience in gardens, grounds, irrigation, pool, vehicle and facility maintenance.
3. Current NT Light Rigid (LR) Drivers Licence
4. Demonstrated ability to determine priorities, meet deadlines, use initiative, and work independently or within your team.
5. Building/general handyman experience with an ability to produce a high standard of finish, including welding and repairs
6. Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and working with children with special needs.
7. Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills when dealing with the public, contractors, school staff and students.
8. Knowledge and ability to work within the framework of the Work, Health and Safety guidelines.
9. Accredited certificate or ability to obtain both Test and Tag Certificate and Handling Hazardous Chemicals Certificate
10. Current Working with Children’s Card
Desirable
• St Johns First Aid Certificate (or ability to obtain)
