About Ian Donald Optometrist
Ian Donald Optometrist is a well-established independent optometry practice located in Manly. The practice has served the local community for more than 60 years and is committed to clinical excellence, patient-centred eye care and high-quality optical dispensing.
Our practice uses modern diagnostic and dispensing equipment and operates an on-site optical laboratory. We are seeking an Optical Dispenser to join our experienced and supportive team on a full-time basis.
About the Position
The Optical Dispenser will work closely with our optometrists and optical team to interpret optical prescriptions and dispense, fit, adjust, repair and maintain spectacles and other optical appliances.
The position requires attention to detail, sound technical dispensing skills and a strong commitment to professional patient care.

Key Responsibilities
· Interpret optical prescriptions issued by optometrists and ophthalmologists.
- Take accurate facial, pupillary distance, segment height and other dispensing measurements.
- Assist patients to select suitable spectacle frames and lenses based on their prescription, visual requirements, occupation, lifestyle and preferences.
- Advise patients about lens designs, materials, coatings, frames and other optical products.
- Fit, adjust and dispense spectacle frames and lenses to meet individual patient requirements.
- Edge, fit and finish lenses using the practice’s on-site optical laboratory equipment.
- Check completed spectacles for prescription accuracy, lens quality, alignment, fit and finish before dispensing.
- Adjust and repair spectacle frames and other optical appliances.
- Identify and resolve fitting, comfort and adaptation issues.
- Order frames, lenses and other optical products from suppliers and laboratories.
- Maintain accurate patient, prescription, order and dispensing records.
- Advise patients about the appropriate use, care and maintenance of their eyewear.
- Maintain optical dispensing equipment, tools and the laboratory work area.
- Work collaboratively with optometrists and other members of the practice team.
- Deliver consistently high standards of professional service and patient care.
These responsibilities are consistent with the recognised work of Optical Dispensers, including interpreting optical prescriptions, taking facial measurements, assisting with frame selection, shaping and fitting lenses, repairing spectacles and supplying optical products.
Qualifications and Experience
The successful applicant will have:
· a relevant qualification in optical dispensing, or relevant practical experience in optical dispensing;
- demonstrated ability to interpret optical prescriptions accurately;
- experience taking optical and facial measurements;
- experience fitting, adjusting and repairing spectacle frames and lenses;
- knowledge of lens designs, materials, coatings, frames and optical products;
- strong accuracy and attention to detail;
- professional communication and patient-service skills;
- the ability to work independently and as part of a clinical team; and
- availability to work in a full-time position.
Experience using optical laboratory equipment, including edging and fitting lenses, will be highly regarded.
Junior applicants with appropriate training, aptitude and a genuine commitment to developing their optical dispensing skills are also encouraged to apply.
