Primary objective
As an active member of the school leadership team, the Head of Year provides leadership to their student cohort across all
areas of student welfare, ensuring students are supported to achieve their highest levels of social, emotional, and academic
success.
Context statement
Katherine High School is the only government secondary school in Katherine. It provides an educational service to students
from Year 7 to Year 12. In the Senior Years students are provided with multiple achievement pathways to ensure they
receive the education most appropriate to their needs. The school caters to a diverse population from a range of different
social, educational and ethnic backgrounds. The school takes great pride in its inclusive practices and works hard to live up

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide leadership that maximises student outcomes through the individual monitoring and tracking of curriculum
completion, engagement, attendance, and achievement.
2. Undertake duties related to student enrolment, curriculum counselling, timetabling, and the development and
implementation of individual education and transition pathways.
3. Lead and support student wellbeing through the organisation of year-level activities, including camps, assemblies, PBiS
initiatives, and events that promote the school values of respect, trust, responsibility, honesty, and high expectations.
4. Analyse student data to inform case management and provide targeted support for attendance, engagement, and
achievement.
5. Actively contribute to student welfare solutions through engagement with parents, teachers, school wellbeing teams, and
relevant external agencies.
6. Provide school-wide leadership through participation in whole-school planning, decision-making, and review processes,
and undertake a teaching load as part of the role.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated ability to effectively use student data to maximise curriculum completion, engagement, attendance, and
achievement.
2. Demonstrated knowledge and application of Department of Education policies and procedures relating to the provision
of senior secondary education.
3. Demonstrated ability to build and sustain positive relationships within and beyond the school community, fostering a
culture of high expectations and inclusion.
4. Proven knowledge and experience of student welfare and behaviour management strategies appropriate for a wide range
of students.
5. Demonstrated high-level written and oral communication skills with the ability to apply negotiation and conflict resolution
strategies effectively.
