Primary objective
Under direction of the Environmental, Safety, and Health (ESH) Officer, ensure the delivery of quality Health, Safety, and Environment
(HSE) programs for the Rum Jungle Rehabilitation Stage 3 Project. The role includes delivery of works required to support the project as
a whole, conducting environmental monitoring programs, preparing quality, evidence-based reports and leading revegetation programs.
Context statement
The Northern Territory Government (NTG), in partnership with the Commonwealth Government (Cth), have been developing a leading
practice rehabilitation strategy for the former Rum Jungle mine site since 2009. Stage 3 of the rehabilitation project will deliver the
complete construction and works program. The workplace is characterised by changing priorities, rapid turn-around times and requires
considerable resilience and flexibility.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide professional advice and services to management on environmental management and monitoring programs for the Rum Jungle
Rehabilitation Project.
2. Support the HSE team in development, implementation and management of the health, safety, and environmental aspects of the
project, ensuring an on-site presence to provide real time information and contribute to a safe work environment across the project in
line with relevant legislation.
3. Provide high-level support to the HSE team in the delivery of the surface and groundwater monitoring, radiation safety and
Environmental monitoring program with support from the Environmental Monitoring Unit.
4. Work with a small team of Land Management Technicians, providing support and direction to ensure project objectives are met.
5. Provide assistance to heritage related aspects of the Project as required.
6. Liaise with external regulators and respond to requirements from regulators.
7. Actively seek training, development and participation opportunities for Land Management Technicians and the broader Traditional
Owner group and support the team to deliver.
8. Plan, execute and review remediation and rehabilitation work under Stage 3 rehabilitation.
9. Engage and build relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that the objectives of Stage 3 rehabilitation can be
met.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science or other relevant science discipline.
2. Well-developed working knowledge of relevant legislation including the Work Health and Safety (NUL) Act, Environmental Protection Act
(NT) 2019, Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Act (Cth), Waste Management and Pollution Control Act (NT) and other
relevant legislation and industry standards.
3. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the field of environmental management relevant to the mining industry.
4. Experience and knowledge in spatial database use and management.
5. Good written and verbal communication skills, technical and non-technical report writing, including the ability to clearly articulate
complex concepts and critical issues with simplicity.
6. Experience in delivering results against a schedule, using a range of systems and reporting tools to manage to regulatory requirements
and/or established outcomes.
7. Experience in complex problem-solving including ability to interpret information and knowledge from across a broad range of science
and engineering disciplines, integrating with social requirements, using a risk-based decision-making methodology.
8. A sound knowledge of the principles of equity and diversity, occupational health and safety, and people and project management.
9. Demonstrated cross cultural awareness, understanding and knowledge, including a sound understanding of cultural sensitivities and
needs in working with Aboriginal people.
Desirable
1. First Aid Certificate
2. Ability to operate a four-wheel drive.
Further information
The applicant will be required to have a willingness to travel to and from the mine site in Batchelor as required, and hold a current Territory
C Class Drivers licence, Industry White Card and First Aid Certificate. Applicants should supply a certified copy of their qualification with
