We are looking for a Solicitor or Associate to join Partner Milton Latta's General Liability practice in our Brisbane office. This is a great opportunity for someone early in their career to be mentored by senior specialists, build strong client relationships and develop their expertise across a varied and fast-paced general liability caseload.
The Professional Liability team works across three sub-areas: professional indemnity, D&O and management liability, handling claims made against professionals across all industries. The team acts for underwriters, brokers, insureds, representative bodies, accountants and auditors, company directors and officers, trustees, financial advisers, engineers, architects, financial institutions, barristers, solicitors, hospitals and medical and para-medical professionals. The team also works closely with the REIQ on matters under their Professional Indemnity Insurance Scheme, defending real estate industry claims including resident unit managers.
Milton practises across the full spectrum of injury and property claims, with a particular focus on construction and contractor claims, mining claims, work-related claims, contractual indemnity disputes, product liability claims and hotel and shopping centre claims.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Managing a caseload of general liability matters, with a growing level of independence as you develop in the role
- Drafting and reviewing legal documents, agreements and formal legal opinions
- Advising clients directly and contributing to matter strategy in consultation with senior lawyers
- Participating in negotiations, mediations and court proceedings, with more independent conduct expected at Associate level
- Managing your own budget and consistently billing 6.5 chargeable hours per day
- Building and maintaining strong client relationships, with greater autonomy at Associate level
- Supervising and mentoring law graduates, junior solicitors and other team members
- Business development and networking activities — maintaining awareness of client-related topics and issues, and retaining and building business with existing and new clients
- Contributing to the ongoing learning and development within the team
- 1 to 3 years post-admission experience in general liability, personal injury or insurance litigation
- LLB or equivalent and a current (or eligible) Queensland Practising Certificate
- Proactive, positive and responsive approach with strong attention to detail and well-developed analytical skills
- Highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to quickly build rapport with internal and external clients
- Strong client focus with the ability to understand and anticipate client needs
- Ability to sustain high performance, problem solve and meet deadlines with limited supervision
- Highly developed time management and organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and adapt to changing schedules
