About the Opportunity
Located within the Great Barrier Reef catchment, Mackay is at the forefront of sustainable agriculture, offering a unique environment where productivity and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. This role provides the opportunity to partner with local producers to enhance farm performance while contributing to improved water quality and positive environmental outcomes.
As a Technical Agronomist, you'll work closely with progressive sugarcane and mixed farming enterprises, delivering expert agronomic advice and tailored solutions that drive productivity, profitability, and long-term sustainability.
You'll become a trusted advisor to your customers, combining strong technical expertise with commercial acumen to develop lasting relationships and deliver measurable value. Working alongside industry-leading producers, you'll support the implementation of best-practice farming systems, nutrient and pesticide management strategies, and sustainability initiatives that contribute to the long-term health of both farming businesses and the Great Barrier Reef.
What You'll Do:
Provide expert agronomic and technical advice to growers across the region.
Project management, reporting and meeting key milestones.
Support branch field staff and training needs.
Laise with Government with legislation requirements and industry bodies.
Develop crop nutrition, weed, and pest management plans that improve productivity, sustainability, and on-farm performance while ensuring compliance with Great Barrier Reef catchment requirements.
Support growers in implementing nutrient management strategies and best-practice farming systems that contribute to positive water quality outcomes.
Identify and pursue new business opportunities to grow market share and customer value.
Build trusted customer relationships and expand your portfolio through exceptional service and technical expertise.
Conduct on-farm visits, assess crop performance, and provide tailored recommendations.
Share technical, seasonal, and market insights to support customer decision-making.
Coordinate field trials, demonstration sites, grower events, and field days.
Stay current with agronomic innovations, industry developments, and emerging technologies.
Computer skills – Excel and mapping would be advantageous.
What You'll Bring:
Tertiary qualification in Agricultural Science or a related discipline.
Proven agronomy experience with strong technical expertise and customer relationship skills.
Sound knowledge of crop nutrition, fertiliser, and crop protection products.
Commercially minded, with the ability to identify new business opportunities and grow customer relationships.
Excellent communication, planning, and organisational skills.
Ability to work autonomously while contributing to a collaborative, high-performing team.
Passion for sustainable agriculture, including nutrient management, crop protection, and environmental stewardship.
Knowledge of sugarcane production systems, Great Barrier Reef initiatives, and water quality programs will be highly regarded.
Current driver's licence.
