NSW Treasury sits at the centre of government as the principal adviser on financial, economic and fiscal matters for the State.
As Director, Commercial Policy and Advice, you will operate at this centre, shaping how government businesses are governed, how commercial frameworks are designed, and how public value is created across the State’s portfolio of commercial entities.
This is a unique opportunity to influence whole-of-government policy settings that underpin the performance of State-Owned Corporations, Public Financial Corporations and other government businesses. As Director, Commercial Policy and Advice, you will lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of the NSW Government’s Commercial Policy Framework, and advise government on a range of existing and prospective commercial investments and opportunities.
This is a senior leadership role for a commercially astute and strategically minded professional who can translate complex policy, financial and performance insights into clear, actionable advice to government decision-makers.
You will operate at the highest levels of government, supporting the Treasurer, Finance Minister, Cabinet and senior executives through evidence-based advice, major policy reviews and reform initiatives that shape how government businesses operate and perform.

Reporting line
The Director, Commercial Policy and Advice reports to the Executive Director within the Commercial / Commercial Assets Division of NSW Treasury. Read more about your future Group and Division.

This role operates in a complex, high-profile and politically sensitive environment where commercial strategy, public policy and government priorities intersect.
You will lead through influence, partnering with senior stakeholders across Treasury, government agencies, State Owned Corporations, other government businesses and boards to shape policy direction and drive reform outcomes.
Success will require strong judgement, resilience and the ability to analyse complex issues, navigate ambiguity and deliver high-quality advice within tight timeframes to support executive and ministerial decision-making.
What you’ll do (and why it matters)
- Lead the development and continuous improvement of the NSW Government’s Commercial Policy Framework, ensuring government businesses operate effectively under commercial principles
- Provide expert, evidence-based advice to the Secretary, Treasurer, Ministers and Cabinet on complex and emerging policy issues
- Drive strategic policy reviews and reform initiatives to enhance the performance, governance and alignment of government businesses
- Analyse complex and sensitive commercial, financial and policy issues to develop practical, balanced and actionable solutions
- Act as a key liaison with State Owned Corporations and government entities, providing timely advice on risk, governance and commercial matters
- Oversee some of the State’s investments in government businesses, supporting sound governance, financial management and performance outcomes
- Collaborate with executives and boards to shape strategies, investment proposals and reform agendas
- Uphold strong governance, risk management and probity frameworks to ensure public trust and value for money

About you
- You are a senior leader with extensive experience in commercial policy, public sector financial management or strategic advisory roles
- You bring a strong track record of leading complex policy reviews, reforms or commercial initiatives within government or highly regulated environments
- You have highly developed analytical capability, able to assess complex and sensitive issues and translate them into practical, evidence-based solutions
- You are credible at senior levels, able to influence and negotiate across government, boards, executives and external stakeholders
- You bring strong commercial and financial acumen, with an understanding of governance, risk management and financial performance frameworks
- You are an authentic and capable people leader, able to build high-performing teams and drive outcomes through others
- You thrive in complex environments, demonstrating resilience, sound judgement and the ability to deliver under pressure.
