The primary purpose of the Career Medical Officer is the assessment, investigation and initial management of patients presenting to the Emergency Department under the supervision of the Emergency Physician on duty. Working in this position also serves to support completion of the Certificate and Diploma of Emergency Medicine through the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM).
Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the medical officer’s skills, knowledge and experience. The medical officer will be expected to adopt a progressively more autonomous approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Specialist. All patients managed within the hospitals of the health district are under the direct care of a Specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly documented and communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.
What you'll be doing
- Manage patients in the Emergency Department in an autonomous manner with minimal supervision from the Specialist.
- Ensure entries in medical records include clinical assessment, tests or treatment planned, complications or side effects, problem list and discharge/admission plans.
- Coordinate with surgical, nursing and other disciplines to ensure optimal care including diagnostic tests and consultations.
- Ensure that review of all pathology, radiology and other diagnostic reports are undertaken and advising the supervising specialist of relevant results.
- Communicate any significant change in the patient’s condition to the Specialist and undertake appropriate action. This may include initiating immediate treatment as appropriate in consultation with nursing staff. This may include cardio-pulmonary resuscitation of the patient.
