What you'll be doing
The Aboriginal Cultural Capability Team Leader provides strategic and operational leadership to cultivate an organisation wide culture that is respectful, inclusive, and responsive to Aboriginal people. This role plays a critical part in driving sustainable cultural change by building strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders and influencing organisational practices to embed cultural safety at every level.
Leading the team, the role is responsible for coordinating and supporting the delivery of high-impact programs that strengthen cultural capability across the organisation. It shapes and champions the development, implementation, governance, and reporting of initiatives that promote Aboriginal cultural capability, inclusion, and respect, ensuring these efforts are aligned with broader organisational goals.
A key focus of the role is to lead and facilitate the delivery of Respecting the Difference training, embedding cultural capability and safety into everyday practice. The Team Leader provides strategic guidance to empower Aboriginal staff and ensure culturally sensitive approaches are integrated into workforce and service delivery activities.
Working closely with executives, line managers, and a range of stakeholders, the role supports the development of sustainable cultural safety frameworks and strengthens governance mechanisms that uphold accountability, policy alignment, and continuous improvement. It also provides bespoke training and advisory support for business units seeking to enhance their cultural capability.
This position requires, strong local community connections, and the ability to provide astute, respectful guidance to non-Aboriginal stakeholders. Through its leadership, the Aboriginal Cultural Capability Team Leader enables culturally safe and inclusive practices to be embedded across the organisation, fostering an environment where Aboriginal staff and communities feel respected, valued, and supported.
This position requires a deep understanding of the impact of history impacting on the capacity for Aboriginal people to access services, particularly in the health sector.
Selection Criteria
- This is a position identified for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people on the basis of a genuine occupational qualification under Section 14(d) of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act (1977).
- Relevant tertiary qualifications, or equivalent experience, with demonstrated high-level skills in leadership, partnering with stakeholders and the development and delivery of training initiatives, particularly in cultural capability training.
- Experience in leading teams and creating, managing, and implementing training and initiatives, preferably with a focus on cultural capability, safety, and workforce development that promotes Aboriginal perspectives.
- Demonstrated high level interpersonal, negotiation, consultation and communication skills, with the ability to address challenges related to cultural capability, inclusion, and systemic barriers in diverse workplace settings.
- Proven ability to strategically engage with internal and external stakeholders, including the ability to collaborate with Aboriginal communities, leadership teams and external organisations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively influence change through advocacy and strategic dialogue that centres Aboriginal voices and fosters inclusive, culturally safe environments.
- Demonstrated ability to support the Team through mentoring, debriefing, advocacy, and professional development fostering a culturally safe and inclusive workplace.
Demonstrated project and program management capabilities, including familiarity with relevant government policies, frameworks, and legislation related specifically to Aboriginal people.
