Sporting Wheelies is looking for enthusiastic Casual Coaches to join our Para Sport & Recreation Team in Cairns. We have opportunities across three inclusive sport programs:
- Adaptive Aquatics
- Adaptive Table Tennis
- Para Powerlifting & Wheelchair Fundamentals

Sporting Wheelies is Queensland's leading provider of disability support and active recreation opportunities, supporting people with disability to lead advice, healthy and connected lives.
Through our Para Sport & Recreation Team, we deliver inclusive programs that help participants develop skills, build confidence, improve wellbeing and progress from first-time participation through to community and competitive support.
About the Opportunities
We have three casual coaching roles available across our Para Sport & Recreation program in Cairns. Depending on your skills, experience and qualifications, you may be suited to one of the following opportunities:
- Adaptive Aquatics
Support participants of varying abilities to develop water confidence, movement, coordination, strength, fitness and independence through safe and inclusive aquatic activities.
- Adaptive Table Tennis
Help participants develop table tennis skills, coordination, movement, balance, hand-eye coordination and confidence while encouraging social connection and ongoing participation in sport.
- Para Powerlifting & Wheelchair Fundamentals
Support participants to develop strength, technique and confidence through Para Powerlifting, alongside essential wheelchair handling, movement, ball skills and physical fitness through our Wheelchair Fundamentals program.
What You’ll Be Doing
As a Casual Coach, you’ll:
- Deliver safe, engaging and inclusive coaching sessions.
- Adapt activities, equipment and coaching approaches to meet individual abilities and needs.
- Support participants to build skills, confidence, coordination and physical literacy.
- Create a welcoming, positive and participant-centred environment.
- Encourage safe participation, teamwork and ongoing involvement in sport.
- Monitor participant progress and maintain relevant program records.
- Work collaboratively with volunteers, Sporting Wheelies staff and the Spinal Life Healthy Living Centre team.
- Follow safeguarding, risk management and organisational requirements.
About You
We’re looking for coaches who are passionate about inclusive sport and creating positive experiences for people with disability.
Depending on the program you’re interested in, you’ll bring relevant experience or qualifications in areas such as:
- Swimming or aquatic coaching.
- Table Tennis coaching.
- Strength and conditioning, Para Powerlifting, wheelchair skills or other relevant strength-based or adaptive sports.
- Community, disability, adaptive or inclusive sport and recreation.
You’ll also have strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt your coaching approach for participants with different abilities and experience levels.
Successful applicants will require, or be willing and able to obtain:
- Current First Aid and CPR.
- Blue Card (Working with Children Check).
- NDIS Worker Screening Clearance.
Relevant coaching qualifications, experience working with people with disability and knowledge of adaptive coaching practices will be highly regarded.
