St George Hospital Emergency Department provides opportunities for ACEM trainees to rotate to subspecialties such as trauma, paediatrics, medicine, toxicology, anaesthetics, ED ultrasound, ED/quality improvement, ED/education, ICU and rural experiences and our staffing allows a roster that balances work and life priorities. We have a complete ED teaching and training program with dedicated FACEMs and this has delivered excellent exam outcomes in both the Primary and Fellowship exams. More importantly, it has developed outstanding FACEMs who now work at St George and throughout EDs in Australia.
The primary purpose of a Trainee Stage 1 in Emergency Medicine is to provide high quality medical care under appropriate supervision to undifferentiated patients presenting to the Emergency Department.
Trainees undertaking the care of medical patients should ensure that they operate within their own level of expertise within a collaborative clinical care model and to seek consultation with their colleagues when appropriate. Trainees work under a level of supervision according to their competence in the following activities:
Taking a leadership role in coordinating the admission, assessment, management, and discharge planning of patients
Have direct clinical involvement in the care of all patients, including the critically ill
Providing clinical supervision to junior medical staff
Providing overall medical management and support for the ED in conjunction with senior nursing staff
Communicating assessment and management decisions to other staff involved in the patient's care
Communicating with the patient / family regarding the patient's condition and management plans
Coordinating diagnostic tests and consultations with other medical specialists
Arranging the patient discharge process and liaising with local medical officers and community based care modalities for optimal post discharge care
Be actively involved in teaching, research and quality programs
Role modelling leadership within the emergency department
You must be a Stage 1 trainee with the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM) or have applied to or intend to apply to be a Stage 1 Trainee with ACEM to commence in 2027.

The St George Hospital Emergency Department is one of the busiest in New South Wales and provides a comprehensive training environment for all stages of ACEM ED training. Presentations range across the spectrum from paediatrics, trauma, medicine, surgery, O&G and critically ill patients.
Over 80,000 patients per year attend the Emergency Department, 25% aged less than 16 years of age. Our overall admission rate is approximately 33%. We are the trauma centre for Southern Sydney and Southern NSW with approximately up to 2,000 trauma presentations annually. The Emergency Department also has a purpose-built short stay ward (EDSSU).
Emergency FACEMs provide direct clinical cover from 8:00am to midnight 7 days a week with an on-call consultant overnight.

- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- Demonstrated ability to work with appropriate independence, commensurate with a level of a Specialist Trainee, within a supervised complex clinical environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the planning, delivery and coordination of patient care.
- Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, family members and other members of the health care team.
- Demonstrated good organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
