What you'll be doing
To allow Trainees to complete the requirements of training for Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, as specified in the College training program whilst providing anaesthetic care to patients under the supervision of a nominated Consultant. This position allows for the development of skills required for independent practice in cardiothoracic anaesthesia, as well as the opportunity to undertake non-clinical sessions for education, research and leadership roles as appropriate.
This position is aimed primarily at fellows of the college who are seeking to further their cardiac anaesthetic experience with a second fellowship. Consideration will however be given to appropriately qualified applicants who have not yet completed a fellowship year.
All decision-making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the medical officer’s skills, knowledge, and experience. The Trainee will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance and at the discretion of a supervising Consultant. All patients managed within SLHD are under the direct care of a Specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care should be clearly communicated with the Specialist responsible.
It is expected that the Trainee will achieve the following during their year in this fellowship position:
- To gain skills in the pre-operative assessment and preparation of patients for cardiothoracic surgery
- To gain experience in the administration of anaesthesia for cardiothoracic surgery and robotic cardiothoracic procedures
- To gain experience in the provision of medical perfusion for cardiopulmonary bypass and extra-corporeal circulatory support
- To gain experience in the provision of transoesophageal and transthoracic echocardiography. Trainees are encouraged to make use of the extensive educational support provided for those who want to gain formal postgraduate transoesophageal echocardiography qualifications
- To participate in research activities related to cardiothoracic anaesthesia
- To participate in after-hours rosters including the Obstetrics roster
- To fulfil the educational and training requirements for trainees as a Provisional Fellow (as specified by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists) if not already attained
- Participation in Medical Officer & Departmental teaching sessions
- To learn good presentation skills through education and research presentations and QA activities such as morbidity/mortality reviews and critical incident reports
- To gain experience in providing support for junior colleagues and peers
