About the Role
We're a boutique contracting firm engaging legally qualified writers to produce high-quality legal research and written content for an established client. We are currently seeking candidates who are legally qualified in Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong or South Africa.
This is genuinely flexible work: there is no office and working hours can be arranged flexibly around your location and availability. You will take on assignments and modules that align with your expertise and deliver them within agreed timelines, working through an established editorial and substantive review workflow.
The role is about writing legal content by lawyers, for lawyers. We are particularly interested in candidates who can combine strong jurisdiction-specific legal knowledge and research skills with the ability to produce clear, accurate and highly structured English-language content.
What You'll Do
- Conduct legal research across a range of practice areas in your relevant jurisdiction
- Research and work with legal and regulatory sources, including sources in languages other than English where applicable
- Draft clear, accurate, well-structured legal and regulatory content in English
- Analyse legal issues, legislation, regulations and other legal sources and translate them into polished written work
- Write summaries and explanations of legislation and regulatory requirements
- Produce content in accordance with detailed product specifications and house style requirements
- Work through an editorial and substantive review workflow, responding to feedback and making revisions where required
- Manage your own workload and meet tight turnaround times
- Work independently, with opportunities to collaborate with other writers on specific modules or projects
What You'll Need
- Legal qualification in the relevant jurisdiction — Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong or South Africa (required)
- Strong substantive legal knowledge and legal research skills, with the ability to identify, analyse and accurately interpret relevant legal sources
- Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas:

- Strong legal writing skills in English — you can explain complex legal and regulatory issues clearly, accurately and concisely
- The necessary language proficiency to work confidently with legal sources in languages other than English, where applicable, and to deliver high-quality content in English
- Demonstrated writing and/or editorial project experience, ideally involving highly structured legal or regulatory content
- Strong technical skills and confidence working with technology, including bespoke tools, platforms and IT generally
- The ability to follow detailed product design, content structure and house style requirements consistently
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy
- The ability to work autonomously and reliably, without close day-to-day supervision
- The ability to work to tight turnaround times while maintaining a high standard of quality
- Availability to work approximately 30 hours per week ideally, and not less than 20 hours per week, for the next several months
- Availability for at least one month, subject to commencement date and ongoing requirements
- Flexibility to work around your local time zone, with some expectation of participating in check-in calls with our Australia-based coordinator
- Ideally, immediate availability, or availability from a specific date in the near future
Demonstrated Expertise
We would appreciate demonstrated expertise and aptitude in terms of both substantive legal knowledge and writing/editorial project experience, supported by evidence.
In your application, please identify the areas in which you have substantive experience and provide examples of relevant legal, research, writing, regulatory, compliance or editorial work.

- Experience working on editorial or legal-content projects with defined product specifications and house style requirements
- Experience working with international or comparative legal issues
- Experience working remotely and collaborating across time zones

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to complete an unpaid written task as part of the selection process, involving the preparation of a summary of a piece of new or amended legislation. There is a time limit of 3 hours in which to complete the task.
Successful candidates may be able to commence almost immediately, subject to completion of the selection and onboarding process.
Rate: AUD $50–55 per hour, paid every four weeks for hours actually worked in each four-week cycle.
