Who we are
The Office of the Supervising Scientist (OSS) is a specialist scientific organisation within the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (Commonwealth). We are responsible for protecting the people and environment of the Alligator Rivers Region, including Kakadu National Park, from the effects of uranium mining. We conduct environmental research and monitoring around operating and rehabilitated uranium mining sites, participate in and oversee the regulatory process and developing standards and practices for environmental protection.
Environment & Water Outcomes Delivery ensures the protection of the Alligator Rivers Region, including Kakadu National Park, and the local communities from the effects of uranium mining by undertaking environmental research and monitoring, participating in and overseeing the regulatory process and developing standards and practices for environmental protection.
Our Jabiru Field Station in Jabiru, Kakadu National Park supports the environmental monitoring and research conducted by OSS. A key focus is the delivery of the continuous water quality monitoring program, including data collection and the maintenance of field-based equipment. Atmospheric and biomonitoring programs are also routinely undertaken by the Jabiru Field Station team.

The job
- Assist with maintenance and installation of 12V systems.

Safely operate small trailer boats on in-land water ways.
-
Safely operate 4wd vehicles and UTVs in an off-road environment.

Service scientific equipment.
-
Take and process water samples in accordance with set procedures.

Provide logistical support to scientific staff undertaking fieldwork, including stream gauging.

Undertake various maintenance tasks on OSS vehicles, vessels and facilities; including vehicle cleaning and routine safety inspections.

Assist in communication and consultation activities with local Aboriginal groups.

What we are looking for
We are seeking candidates who can demonstrate the following:
Knowledge and experience
- Experience working with and installing 12 Volt power systems.
-
Experience with general repairs/maintenance of boat/vehicle trailers.
-
Experience with servicing/maintenance of small engine vehicles and equipment – UTV, Outboard motors, brush cutters etc.
-
Experience operating on and around waterways and operating small trailer boats, UTV’S and 4WD’s.
-
Willing to learn new skills relating to collection and processing of water samples, various scientific instrument calibrations, datalogger interrogation etc.
-
Previous experience in water quality monitoring/sampling is desirable but not essential.
Skills and capabilities
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team in a remote locality under general guidance.

Willingness to learn and develop new skills and ability to contribute and adapt to changing methods.

Attention to detail, lateral thinking and problem-solving skills.

Strong work ethic, reliable and ability to take initiative.

Current or ability to obtain coxswain certificate.

Ability to operate and obtain certification in 4x4 and UTV operation and willingness to fly in helicopters.

Desirable qualifications
- Training and or qualifications in environmental science, water industry operations or experience in the use of water quality monitoring instrumentation.

- hold a current Apply First Aid Certificate or have the ability to obtain this qualification,

hold a current coxswains licence or have the ability to obtain,

hold and maintain a current manual driver’s licence and ability to drive a 4WD vehicle,

hold and maintain a valid Australian motor vehicle drivers licence,

note that the physical requirements of the role(s) involve a combination of outdoor and office-based work,

note that you will be required to complete specific training (including refresher training) related to the role including remote area training, defensive driving, first aid and CPR courses,

note that you will be required to travel in remote/isolated locations in northern Australia or its near northern neighbours, using a variety of transport including vessels, light/commercial aircraft, helicopters and manual four wheel drive vehicles,

note that you will be required, from time to time, to work in difficult, remote and harsh environments (possibly for extended periods) under limited supervision or in teams,

wear an official uniform supplied by the department, including during field operations (as applicable), in accordance with the department’s uniform policy,

wear appropriate protective personal equipment and clothing to comply with departmental Work Health & Safety policies and procedures
Eligibility and other requirements
Citizenship - to be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.
