Veterinarian – Surgical Mentor & Team Developer
Vetwest Whitfords
Love surgery? Love teaching? Looking for a role where you can genuinely help develop the next generation of vets?
Vetwest Whitfords is looking for an experienced veterinarian with a special interest in surgery and a genuine passion for mentorship to join our team.
We have a diverse and enthusiastic veterinary team, with clinicians at different stages of their careers and with a wide range of interests including surgery, behaviour, rehabilitation and medicine. What brings the team together is a strong commitment to learning, collaboration and providing great patient care.
Our clinic is led by a passionate Lead Veterinarian who places a strong emphasis on team development, clinical growth and creating opportunities for people to develop their individual areas of interest. We are now looking for another experienced vet who shares this ethos and would enjoy playing an active role in developing the clinical capability and confidence of our team.
The opportunity
This is not a purely surgical position. You will continue to enjoy the variety of general practice, with a combination of consulting and surgical shifts, but with a strong focus on surgical mentorship, teaching and team development.
We are particularly looking for someone who enjoys surgery and gets just as much satisfaction from helping someone else develop their surgical skills as they do from performing the procedure themselves.
You will have the opportunity to:
Provide hands-on surgical mentorship to our New Graduates and junior veterinarians.
Support vets as they build confidence in routine and more advanced surgical procedures.
Share your knowledge, techniques and clinical reasoning in a supportive and approachable way.
Assist with surgical case planning and provide guidance before, during and after procedures.
Help identify opportunities for our vets to progressively develop their surgical skills.
Work alongside our Lead Vet to support the broader clinical development of the team.
Continue to manage your own consulting, medical and surgical caseload.
Contribute to a clinic culture where questions are encouraged, knowledge is shared and everyone continues to learn.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for an experienced veterinarian who has a strong interest and confidence in surgery, but equally importantly, someone who genuinely enjoys developing others.
You don't need to be a specialist surgeon. What matters to us is that you are an experienced clinician who enjoys surgery, has knowledge to share and has the patience and enthusiasm to help others learn.
You will ideally be someone who:
Has strong general surgical skills and an interest in continuing to develop surgically.
Enjoys mentoring New Graduates and less experienced veterinarians.
Is patient, approachable and comfortable teaching in a practical environment.
Encourages others to have a go while providing the right level of support.
Values collaboration rather than hierarchy.
Enjoys sharing knowledge and discussing cases with colleagues.
Wants to be part of a team where professional development is genuinely valued.
Is happy to contribute across both consulting and surgical areas of general practice.
Why Vetwest Whitfords?
At Whitfords, we recognise that not every vet wants to develop in exactly the same direction – and we think that's a strength.
Our team has varied clinical interests, including behaviour, rehabilitation, medicine and surgery, creating an environment where clinicians can learn from each other and pursue the areas of veterinary medicine they are most passionate about.
For the right person, this is an opportunity to have a genuine impact – not only through the patients you treat, but through the veterinarians you help develop along the way.
If you are an experienced vet who loves surgery, enjoys sharing your knowledge and would like to help shape and support the development of a motivated veterinary team, we would love to hear from you.
