Sharma Indian Sweets & Curry House is a well-established Indian restaurant and curry house located in Delahey, Victoria. We specialise in authentic Indian cuisine, including traditional curries, tandoori dishes, vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals, Indo-Chinese dishes, breads, snacks and Indian sweets.
We are currently seeking an experienced and qualified full-time Chef to join our kitchen team. The successful applicant will be responsible for preparing and cooking high-quality Indian dishes, maintaining consistency in flavour and presentation, supporting smooth kitchen operations and ensuring food safety standards are followed at all times.
Key Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be required to:
· Prepare and cook a wide range of authentic Indian dishes, including curries, tandoori items, vegetarian dishes, meat dishes, rice dishes, breads, snacks and Indian sweets.
· Prepare curry bases, sauces, gravies, marinades, spice blends and other ingredients according to established recipes and quality standards.
· Operate and monitor tandoor, grill, fryer and other commercial kitchen equipment safely and efficiently.
· Plan and organise food preparation before and during service to ensure timely delivery of dine-in, takeaway and delivery orders.
· Monitor the quality, taste, portion size, temperature and presentation of dishes at all stages of preparation and service.
· Assist with menu planning, daily specials and improvements to recipes where required.
· Estimate food and ingredient requirements and assist with stock ordering, stock rotation and inventory control.
· Store food and ingredients correctly to minimise waste and maintain freshness.
· Maintain high standards of kitchen hygiene, cleanliness, food safety and workplace health and safety.
· Follow food safety procedures, including safe food handling, temperature control and cleaning schedules.
· Work effectively under pressure during busy service periods.
· Coordinate with other kitchen staff and front-of-house staff to ensure smooth restaurant operations.
· Guide and support junior kitchen staff and kitchen assistants when required.
· Ensure all dishes are prepared consistently in line with the restaurant’s standards and customer expectations.
Skills and Experience Required
Applicants must have:
· Minimum two years of relevant experience as a Chef or in a similar commercial kitchen role.
· Experience preparing Indian cuisine, including curry and/or tandoor dishes.
· Certificate III or Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery, Diploma in Commercial Cookery/Hospitality, or an equivalent relevant qualification.
· Strong knowledge of Indian spices, cooking techniques, food preparation methods and kitchen operations.
· Ability to work in a fast-paced commercial kitchen environment.
· Good understanding of food safety, hygiene and workplace health and safety requirements.
· Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
· Reliability, punctuality and a professional attitude.
