About the role
Statewide opportunity with flexibility to be based at Melbourne CBD, Sunshine, Ballarat, or Geelong.
The Heritage Advisor provides expert advice on Aboriginal and historic heritage across the transport portfolio. The role supports project teams to meet legal requirements, obtain heritage approvals, and deliver practical, compliant heritage outcomes while balancing project, environmental, engineering, and road safety needs.
The role also builds strong relationships with Traditional Owners, Registered Aboriginal Parties, Heritage Victoria, government agencies, consultants, and internal staff. It provides clear advice on heritage management, supports Cultural Heritage Management Plans and other approvals, and helps ensure compliance with the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006, Heritage Act 2017, Traditional Owner Settlement Act 2010, and Native Title Act 1993.
What we’re looking for (Selection Criteria)
You’re someone who:
- Builds strong, trusted relationships with Traditional Owners, Registered Aboriginal Parties, regulators, consultants, and colleagues, communicating clearly and adapting your approach to different audiences.
- Provides practical, independent heritage advice, using sound judgement and critical thinking to balance cultural heritage, compliance, and project outcomes.
- Identifies heritage risks early, develops effective solutions, and supports project teams to achieve compliant and successful outcomes.
- Adapts quickly to changing priorities, works collaboratively across teams, and remains confident and constructive when managing challenges or differing views.
- Applies strong technical expertise to assess cultural heritage impacts and ensure compliance with relevant heritage legislation.

Qualifications and experience
You’ll bring:
- Qualification in archaeology, heritage management or a related discipline.
- Relevant industry experience working in the field of heritage management.
