Moth Design is a Melbourne creative studio. We build sets, environments, and custom installations for events, exhibitions, and high-end visual projects. We’re looking for a Workshop Fabricator & Metalworker to join our team.
We are seeking an experienced and highly practical Workshop Fabricator with a strong leaning toward metalwork.
You’ll work closely with our designers, producers and other makers, taking ownership of the metal fabrication side of our builds while jumping in on general workshop operations, material prep, and site installations.
You're also experienced in other fabrication techniques and happy to give new tasks a go and help out other departments when a deadline is looming.
Key Responsibilities
- Cut, prep, weld (MIG some TIG), grind, and finish custom metal components.
- Combine metalwork with timber and composite materials into finished furniture, sets, and installations.
- Read shop drawings and work out practical build and assembly methods on the fly.
- Prepare materials, assist with general shop builds, and work on-site during installations (including lifting, loading, and assembling components).
- Maintain tools and ensure a safe, clean, and organized workshop environment.
- Collaborate with the fabrication and design team to deliver projects to high visual standards and tight deadlines.
Required Skills and Experience
- MUST be currently located in Melbourne, Australia.
- Solid, hands-on experience in a fabrication, custom trade, or maker workshop environment (Industrial Design background is welcome, provided you have real shop-floor experience).
- Strong proficiency with metal fabrication tools and welding.
- Inherently handy, resourceful, and comfortable with a wide range of power tools and materials.
- Ability to read technical drawings with a strong eye for detail and design finishes.
- Comfortable with physical work, on-site building, and working to tight deadlines.
- Strong communication skills, proactive attitude, and a solid team player.
- A valid driver’s and/or forklift licence is a plus.
Why Join Moth Design?
- Be part of a dynamic and creative team producing world-class visual environments.
- Work on exciting, diverse, and custom projects across festivals, events, activations, and exhibitions.
- Opportunity for growth and development in a hands-on, creative studio environment.
