The Office of the Queensland Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner (Office) is responsible for producing leading practice technical reports, connecting with stakeholders and the community, reporting on trends and data and advising the Minister, on mine rehabilitation matters.
The Office supports the position of the Queensland Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner, a role appointed under the Environmental Protection Act 1994 and which is an independent, statutory position.
As the Senior Environmental Officer within the Office, you will:
- Seek out and research global leading practice in aspects of mine rehabilitation across environmental, social and governance areas, as well as the sustainability of post-mining land uses and regional economic development.
- Consolidate research findings and prepare written correspondence including reports, papers, briefings, presentations, annual reports, information documents and other formats as required, for a variety of audiences.
- Contribute to the drafting and review and of technical papers, ensuring they meet structural and formatting requirements and communicate technical principles in language that is clear and concise.
- Contribute to identifying systemic issues and opportunities in mine rehabilitation in Queensland and make recommendations for leading practice.
- Engage with industry, academia, community groups, and all levels of government on mine rehabilitation matters, through external and internal presentations; participation in workshops, conferences, forums; via face-to-face, online and on-site meetings.
- Actively participate in team planning, discussions and debriefings and support a positive and safe team culture.
- Assist with administrative functions such as the preparation of meeting agendas and minute taking, answering phone calls, managing the Office's inbox, developing template documents, and maintaining Office databases (such as the Office's Zotero reference library).
- Ensure our advice is accurate and is consistent with regulatory and policy settings or where new policy outcomes may be recommended.
- Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.

This position requires:
- Demonstrated experience researching across multiple disciplines to provide advice on environmental, social and governance issues as they relate to rehabilitation and management of mined land, while ensuring the highest standards of academic rigour.
- Understanding or ability to acquire knowledge of the mining industry and mine rehabilitation.
- Experience in identifying problems and possible solutions including research, comprehension and critical evaluation of relevant technical information and data.
- High level written communication skills that demonstrate experience in preparation of complex materials, synthesising technical information in a clear and succinct manner.
- An ability to communicate with influence.
- Demonstrated planning, organisational and project management skills.
