Primary objective
Provide strategic and operational medical leadership for the Department of Medicine at Alice Springs Hospital, with overall accountability
for clinical performance, workforce management, safety and quality, and service delivery.
Context statement
The Department of Medicine at Alice Springs Hospital operates in a unique regional environment, delivering a broad general medicine
service supported by both locally based and visiting sub-specialty services. The service requires a high level of adaptability to respond to
variable demand and workforce requirements. This is a leadership role coordinating medical services across inpatient and outpatient
settings, working closely with executive, nursing and operational leaders to maintain safe, effective and sustainable service delivery within
available resources. The position includes a 0.5 FTE allocation to leadership and management responsibilities, with up to 0.5 FTE available
for direct clinical service, dependent on service requirements.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide leadership and direction for the Department of Medicine, ensuring alignment with divisional priorities and service requirements
2. Accountable for departmental performance, including service delivery, patient flow and workforce utilisation
3. Lead service planning, development and improvement initiatives to support sustainable models of care
4. Work in partnership with the Business Manager to support workforce planning, rostering and resource management
5. Lead and manage medical workforce, including supervision, development and performance management of senior medical staff
6. Ensure effective clinical governance, including quality improvement, audit and implementation of clinical standards
7. Support teaching, training and supervision of junior medical staff
8. Provide clinical services within General Medicine or a relevant specialty, including participation in the on-call roster as required
9. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in
order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
10. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.
Essential
1. Eligible for general registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or
equivalent specialist qualification
2. Completed not less than the equivalent of six years of full time service in medical practice as a Staff Specialist.
3. Demonstrated high-level communication, interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work effectively across
multidisciplinary teams
4. Proven ability to lead and manage medical workforce, including workforce planning, supervision and performance management
5. Demonstrated understanding of healthcare systems, including operational and resource management in a complex clinical environment
6. Experience in clinical governance, quality improvement and service development
7. Demonstrated commitment to improving health outcomes for Aboriginal populations and experience working in cross-cultural
environments
Desirable
1. Demonstrated experience in a senior clinical leadership role within a hospital setting
2. Experience working in regional, rural or remote health settings
3. Postgraduate qualification in health management, leadership or a related field
