Balcatta VW & Subaru Specialists is an established independent automotive service and repair business that has been operating for more than 40 years. We have a loyal customer base and a consistently busy workshop servicing and repairing a broad range of light vehicles.
We specialise in Volkswagen, Audi, Škoda and Subaru vehicles and operate a hands-on, customer-focused workshop where quality workmanship, efficient operations and long-term customer relationships are important to our business.
We are seeking an experienced Automotive Services Manager to take responsibility for the day-to-day management and performance of our automotive service operations.
About the Role
The Automotive Services Manager will be responsible for organising, controlling and overseeing the operation of our automotive service workshop.
This is a management position involving responsibility for workshop operations, staff supervision, workflow, customer service, service standards, financial performance, parts and inventory coordination, and workplace safety.
The successful applicant will work closely with the business owners and technical staff to ensure the workshop operates efficiently, safely and profitably while maintaining a high standard of customer service and vehicle repair quality.
Key Responsibilities
Your responsibilities will include:
- Managing and coordinating the day-to-day operations of the automotive service workshop;
- Planning workshop capacity, workflow and service schedules to ensure customer vehicles are completed efficiently and within agreed timeframes;
- Allocating work to technicians and apprentices having regard to their qualifications, experience, workload and technical capability;
- Supervising, supporting and monitoring workshop staff and assisting with staff training and performance development;
- Monitoring technician productivity, workshop utilisation and operational performance;
- Establishing and maintaining appropriate service standards, workshop procedures and quality-control processes;
- Reviewing completed work and implementing quality-control measures to minimise repeat repairs and customer comebacks;
- Monitoring the financial performance of the service operation, including labour utilisation, service revenue, parts margins and operating costs;
- Assisting with the preparation and monitoring of workshop budgets, targets and performance reports;
- Managing service pricing and reviewing labour rates and parts margins to maintain a competitive and commercially sustainable operation;
- Coordinating parts requirements, inventory levels and supplier relationships to support efficient workshop operations;
- Negotiating and maintaining relationships with parts suppliers and other automotive service providers;
- Monitoring stock levels, parts usage, returns and inventory controls;
- Managing customer service standards and personally assisting with complex customer enquiries, complaints and service issues;
- Reviewing repair requirements, quotations and service recommendations and ensuring customers receive clear and accurate information;
- Developing and implementing procedures to improve customer retention, repeat business and overall service quality;
- Maintaining accurate workshop, customer, vehicle, warranty and service records;
- Developing, reviewing and implementing operational procedures relating to workshop efficiency, customer service and automotive services;
- Ensuring workshop equipment, tools and facilities are appropriately maintained and available for staff;
- Ensuring compliance with workplace health and safety requirements and maintaining a safe working environment;
- Monitoring operational risks and ensuring appropriate procedures are followed in relation to customer vehicles, workshop equipment and parts inventory; and
- Reporting to the business owners on workshop performance, staffing, customer service, operational issues and opportunities for improvement.
About You
To be successful in this position, you will ideally have:
- A Diploma-level or higher qualification in automotive technology, engineering, business, management or another relevant field;
- At least 3 years of relevant experience in automotive service operations, including experience in a supervisory or management capacity;
- Demonstrated experience managing or coordinating an automotive workshop, dealership service department or comparable automotive service operation;
- Demonstrated experience supervising automotive technicians and allocating workshop work;
- Strong knowledge of automotive servicing, diagnostics, repairs and workshop processes;
- Experience monitoring workshop productivity, service performance and operational targets;
- Experience with budgets, service revenue, labour utilisation, parts margins or other financial aspects of an automotive service operation;
- Experience managing parts, inventory and automotive supplier relationships;
- Strong customer service and complaint-resolution skills;
- Strong leadership, communication, organisational and problem-solving skills;
- Sound knowledge of workplace health and safety requirements within an automotive workshop;
- Strong computer and record-management skills; and
- A current driver's licence.
Experience with Volkswagen, Audi, Škoda and/or Subaru vehicles will be highly regarded but is not essential.
