What you'll do
As the Director Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner (Identified), you will provide strategic leadership and expert guidance to strengthen and advance the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner workforce across Queensland. Working closely with the Chief Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workforce Officer, you will lead the development of innovative workforce models, models of care, and service delivery strategies that optimise scope of practice and support high-quality health outcomes. You will oversee statewide clinical, professional, and cultural governance, including workforce planning, credentialing, education, research, and continuous quality improvement initiatives, ensuring the workforce is equipped to meet current and future healthcare needs. The role is instrumental in promoting the integration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners within multidisciplinary teams, fostering culturally safe and high-performing workplaces, and building leadership capability across the profession. You will also develop and maintain strategic partnerships with key stakeholders, including Ahpra, professional associations, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled Health peak bodies, education providers, clinical networks, and service delivery partners, driving innovative, evidence-based, and culturally responsive healthcare services while ensuring compliance with relevant legislative, professional, and organisational standards.
The successful person
The essential requirements for this role are:
The person performing this role is an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. It is therefore a genuine occupational requirement under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991.
An Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person is a person who identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and is either:
of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent; or
accepted as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community in which he or she lives.
It is mandatory for employees appointed to this role to possess:
Current registration as an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner as recognised by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practice Board (ATSIHPBA); and
A relevant Bachelor degree (AQF level 7) or higher qualification.
Demonstrated expert knowledge and understanding of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health service delivery practices with a proven track record in improving clinical services and establishing robust systems to ensure delivery of safe and reliable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health services, development of professional competency standards and governance frameworks.
Demonstrated competence in providing high level culturally appropriate, strategic, and effective leadership to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health professions, to meet current and future health service delivery needs.
Demonstrated high level strategic leadership expertise across multiple health care facilities resulting in improved patient outcomes.
Proven success in articulating and creating a shared vision, demonstrating courage and commitment in leading change within the service.
Demonstrated competence in communicating effectively with Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples, including knowledge of both cultures and societies from a historical and contemporary perspective.
