About the Role
Avant Mutual is Australia’s largest medical defence organisation, supporting over 90,000 healthcare professionals nationwide. Within our People & Culture (P&C) function, this is a unique opportunity to be the dedicated partner ensuring our operations are backed by strong, practical risk management.
This is a true Line 1 role sitting directly within the function. We are looking for someone who wants to be more than a custodian of a divisional risk profile — be an architect who will actively shape how risk is managed, ensuring the function balances its commercial and strategic goals with robust controls.
Reporting directly to the Head of Strategy & Risk, People & Culture, you will receive hands-on guidance while enjoying a high-visibility platform that offers genuine progression pathways across the broader Avant Group.
Key Accountabilities
- Risk Architecture: Shape, design, and own the divisional risk profile, ensuring risks are proactively identified, assessed, and maintained within approved appetite.
- Proactive Risk Prevention: Move beyond reactive file-checking to embed "Compliance by Design" into the initial stages of P&C initiatives, major transformations, and daily workflows.
- Strategic & Lead Metrics: Develop and track forward-looking Key Risk Indicators (KRIs) to predict and mitigate risks before they manifest as lagging incidents.
- Root Cause Transformation: Lead end-to-end incident management by executing deep-dive Root Cause Analyses (RCA) that fix underlying system and process anomalies permanently.
- Framework Optimisation: Translate enterprise operational risk frameworks into highly efficient, practical, and simplified workflows that front-line teams can easily adopt.
- Regulatory Governance & CPS 230: Manage compliance activities and operational resilience frameworks to ensure all P&C regulatory obligations —including CPS 230 — are seamlessly met.
- Executive-Ready Insights: Deliver sharp, data-driven, and trend-focused risk reporting directly to senior leadership and executive management.
- Culture Uplift: Actively coach and influence P&C stakeholders, driving an organisational culture deeply rooted in clear risk ownership.
Key Capabilities Required
We are seeking a highly analytical, commercially minded risk professional who moves past generic compliance checklists to deliver practical, system-level business solutions.
- Experience: 5+ years of operational risk or compliance experience within an APRA-regulated financial services environment or a top-tier consulting firm.
- Line 1 Expertise: Proven capability in a business-facing 1LOD role, with deep expertise in forward-looking risk management, control environments, and managing risk through organisational change.
- Regulatory Resilience: Practical, working exposure to APRA frameworks and operational resilience requirements (specifically CPS 230).
- HR Alignment (Highly Valued): Prior experience working within or partnering closely with a Human Resources / People & Culture function.
- Influence & Professional Courage: Exceptional stakeholder management skills, with the capability to constructively challenge senior leaders and articulate the long-term commercial value of robust risk management.
- Education: Tertiary qualifications in Business, Commerce, Finance, Law, or a related discipline.
