About the Role
The Victims Assistance Program (VAP), funded by the Department of Justice and Community Safety, provides free, local support to victims of violent crime across Victoria. Recognising the ongoing impacts of intergenerational trauma resulting from colonisation, the Aboriginal Engagement Worker plays a vital role in supporting Aboriginal victims through practical assistance, therapeutic referrals, and guidance in navigating the justice system.
The role will also work in partnership with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs), with regular co-location in community settings, and is supported by a Team Leader to deliver culturally safe, trauma-informed services and contribute to continuous service improvement.
This role is a Fulltime, Fixed Term Contract, ending June 2028. The role can be based in our Wodonga, Wangaratta or Shepparton location, you get to choose.
This is an Aboriginal designated position. Applications are encouraged from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people only.
What You Can Expect

Provide Culturally Safe Case Management by delivering trauma-informed, culturally responsive case management to Aboriginal victims of crime, including assessment, advocacy, referrals, practical support, and assistance navigating the justice system.

Develop strong relationships with Aboriginal communities, ACCOs, and key stakeholders through outreach, community engagement, and participation in local events to strengthen support pathways.

Work closely with Aboriginal and mainstream service providers to coordinate client support, improve referral pathways, and provide cultural guidance and secondary consultation to colleagues.

Conduct risk assessments, including family violence assessments, provide psychosocial support, coordinate co-case management where required, and ensure services are inclusive and client-led.

Maintain accurate case notes and reporting, meet program performance targets, and deliver services in line with VAP Practice Standards, funding requirements, and principles of Aboriginal self-determination.

Participate in supervision, professional development, service evaluation, and team initiatives while promoting culturally safe practice and supporting continuous improvement across the program.
About You
To be successful in the role, you will:

Demonstrated understanding of Aboriginal culture and/or issues affecting the Aboriginal community, including the interconnections between, and effects of, violence, social and economic disadvantage, racism, dispossession from land and culture and removal of children on Aboriginal victims.

Experience undertaking community engagement and service delivery.

Describe your relevant experience, skills, qualifications, and training that prepare you to undertake the responsibilities of an Aboriginal Engagement Worker.

A tertiary qualification in Social Work or a related field (desirable, not essential).

Sound computer and administrative skills.

A current Victorian Driver Licence.
