About the Role
Laserfab is a family-owned and operated metal fabrication company specialising in precision laser cutting, bending, forming, and the manufacture of high-quality custom sheet metal products, including electrical enclosures and components. We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineering Draftsperson to join our team in Yatala, QLD.
In this role, you will create accurate technical drawings and designs that drive our manufacturing processes, ensuring efficient production of complex sheet metal parts and assemblies.
This is a full-time, on-site position - remote or hybrid work is not available, as the role requires day-to-day collaboration with our engineering and production teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed 2D and 3D drawings, plans, and manufacturing specifications for laser-cut parts, bent components, enclosures, and fabricated assemblies using CAD software.
- Work closely with engineers, production teams, and clients to interpret requirements and develop designs optimised for laser cutting, CNC bending, and fabrication processes.
- Assist in the design and modification of mechanical equipment, tooling, jigs, and custom products.
- Generate nesting layouts, flat patterns, and assembly drawings to maximise material usage and manufacturing efficiency.
- Select appropriate materials, tolerances, and finishing requirements for sheet metal projects.
- Estimate material requirements and assist with costings.
- Review and update drawings to ensure compliance with client specifications, Australian standards, and quality requirements.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives in design-for-manufacture (DFM) for laser cutting and sheet metal fabrication.
- Collaborate on prototype development and troubleshooting design or production issues.
About You
- Formal degree qualifications in Mechanical Engineering.
- Strong proficiency in CAD software - experience with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, or sheet metal-specific tools is essential.
- Proven experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment, ideally with sheet metal, laser cutting, or precision engineering.
- Solid understanding of mechanical principles, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and design for manufacturability.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to work to tight deadlines in a fast-paced production setting.
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative team-player attitude.
What We Offer
- $80,000 base salary package.
- Opportunity to work with modern laser cutting and fabrication technology.
- Supportive, family-oriented company culture.
- Ongoing training and development in the latest design and manufacturing techniques.
- Stable, long-term role with a growing local manufacturer.
If you are a detail-oriented drafter passionate about turning engineering concepts into high-quality fabricated products, we’d love to hear from you.
