Primary objective
Manage a work unit and provide guidance and responses to inquiries and complaints about access to information and the handling
of privacy issues by public sector organisations under the Information Act 2002 (NT). Develop and maintain the Office’s role as a
trusted source of policy advice for information and privacy-related matters and support the executive to engage with key
stakeholders and contribute to policy development forums.
Key duties and responsibilities
• Assess, investigate, and resolve the more complex complaints received under the Information Act 2002, including preparing
technical prima facie decision reports, providing advice about matters involving interaction between multiple Acts, data
breaches and breaches of privacy, and supporting the Information Commissioner to conduct mediation.
- Develop and maintain the Office’s role as a trusted source of policy advice for public sector organisations and members of the
public in relation to the
Information Act 2002.
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders and support the Information Commissioner to engage with
fellow Commissioners across Australia and to contribute to key policy development forums.
- Prepare and conduct training and presentations, including the development of educational materials and guidelines.
- Supervise complaints officers and support staff to ensure provision of a professional and timely service to stakeholders.
- Assist with the Office of the Integrity and Ethics Commissioner’s other functions as required by the Commissioner.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. An understanding of freedom of information and privacy laws or transferable expertise, as well as a demonstrated ability to
interpret and apply legislative provisions in an operational capacity.
2. Highly developed oral and written communications skills, including the ability to prepare reports dealing with a wide range of
complex legal, factual and policy issues.
3. Well-developed skills, knowledge, and experience relevant to investigation and resolution of complaints, including those
required for the collection and analysis of evidence.
4. Excellent conceptual and analytical skills, with the ability to research, critically review and present accurate conclusions and
effective recommendations.
5. Demonstrated ability to operate autonomously and as a leader of a small team, including managing a workload of complex
cases to a timely resolution, supervising team members and reporting on performance as required.
6. Proven ability to deal confidentially with sensitive matters, to communicate well with all stakeholders and be sensitive to the
needs of people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
Desirable
1. Tertiary qualification in law and practical experience in public administration.
2. Formal qualifications and experience in mediation and conducting investigations.
