Primary objective
To assist in the implementation of departmental and school-based policies and programs to achieve optimal educational
outcomes for children with varying degrees of impairment and to work collaboratively to facilitate the effective and
successful inclusion of students into the community.
Context statement
Top End School of Flexible Learning is an alternative secondary education setting with multiple campus sites. The Tivendale
Campus is located within the Holtz Youth Detention Centre. It is a flexible learning school for disengaged and at-risk
teenagers in the Darwin, Palmerston and Rural area. TESoFL aims to engage a range of young people at risk of social
isolation, juvenile justice involvement, low education outcomes and unemployment and who may be in care.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Collaborate with and take instruction from the classroom and senior teacher regarding supporting students to access
the curriculum.
2. Actively participate, as a team member, in the planning, preparation, implementation and assessment of individualised
and inclusive educational programs.
3. Effectively communicate with students with a trauma informed approach, families and work colleagues whilst
maintaining confidentiality.
4. Prioritise and perform work tasks in a reliable manner, both as a team member and independently whilst adhering to
school and DET policies.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated successful experience working to support students suffering complex trauma.
2. Proven ability to work within a cross-cultural school environment, interact effectively with people from diverse cultures
and successfully develop effective partnerships with students, parents, and colleagues.
3. Demonstrated ability to work successfully as part of a team as well as independently.
4. High level communication and IT skills including the ability to record and update important student data when required.
5. Current Working with Children Clearance Notice and driver’s license.
Desirable
1. Qualifications related to education support/or disabilities in educational settings.
2. Current First Aid Qualification or ability to obtain.
