About the Role
HR Consultant – On-Demand HR Advisory Services
Flexible Consulting Arrangement
MBM is seeking an experienced Senior HR Consultant to provide practical, on-demand HR advisory support to complement our existing internal HR function.
We are looking for someone who can become a trusted extension of the business — a senior HR practitioner who brings strong judgement, extensive employee relations experience and a practical understanding of professional services environments.
This is not a permanent HR position. The opportunity is designed for an experienced consultant who can provide support as required, particularly where additional experience, guidance or a second opinion would be valuable.
About the opportunity
The consultant will work closely with MBM’s CEO, National Head of QS, Directors, Hub Leaders and HR Advisor.
The focus will be on providing experienced support in relation to complex people matters, while also being available to assist with broader HR projects from time to time.
Core advisory support
The consultant may be engaged to:
provide practical advice on complex employee relations matters;
support managers with performance, conduct, grievances, workplace conflict and disciplinary matters;
help managers prepare for difficult or sensitive conversations;
attend employee or manager meetings where senior HR support would be beneficial;
provide an experienced second opinion on complex or higher-risk matters;
support performance management, disciplinary and termination processes;
assist with workplace complaints and investigations;
review sensitive HR correspondence, documentation and case materials;
identify when external legal advice or an independent investigator should be considered;
provide coaching and practical guidance to senior leaders and managers; and
provide guidance, mentoring and a senior HR perspective to MBM’s HR Advisor.
Additional project support
From time to time, MBM may also engage the consultant to support specific HR projects or broader people initiatives, including:
reviewing MBM’s HR function and identifying practical areas for improvement;
reviewing HR policies and procedures;
providing training and guidance to senior leadership on complex HR matters;
reviewing recruitment processes;
advising on culture, employee engagement and retention;
reviewing performance appraisal and performance management processes; and
supporting other HR-related projects agreed with MBM.
Any project work outside the usual advisory support would be discussed and agreed in advance, including scope, timing, deliverables and fees where applicable.
Skills and Experiences:
About you
We are looking for someone who brings significant senior-level HR experience and strong professional judgement.
Ideally, you will have:
a minimum of 15 years’ HR experience, including substantial senior employee relations and generalist HR experience;
demonstrated experience working within professional services, consulting or a comparable corporate services environment;
a relevant tertiary qualification in Human Resources, Employment Relations, Business or a related discipline;
current professional HR membership, accreditation or professional certification, preferably through AHRI or an equivalent recognised professional body;
strong practical knowledge of Australian employment law, the Fair Work framework and contemporary HR practice;
extensive experience supporting managers through performance, conduct, complaints, investigations and disciplinary matters;
experience working directly with senior executives and experienced managers; and
strong written communication, documentation and case-management capability.
Personal approach
Just as important as technical capability is how you work with people.
We are looking for someone who is:
empathetic and approachable;
calm and measured in sensitive situations;
able to build trust quickly;
practical and commercially aware;
comfortable providing constructive challenge to senior leaders where required;
discreet and highly respectful of confidentiality;
collaborative with MBM’s internal HR function; and
willing to invest time in understanding MBM’s people, leadership team, culture and way of working.
Working arrangement
This is an on-demand consulting arrangement.
Support may be provided remotely; however, the consultant must be willing and available to attend an MBM office when required by the nature of the matter.
There may also be occasions where support is required at relatively short notice.
MBM is seeking continuity in the consulting relationship wherever possible, so the consultant can build familiarity with the business and provide advice that reflects MBM’s context and culture.
Why Join MBM
This is an opportunity to work with an established Australian professional services business and provide senior HR input where it can make a genuine difference.
You will have the opportunity to:
work closely with MBM’s CEO, Directors, Hub Leaders and internal HR function;
provide trusted advice on complex and meaningful people matters;
contribute to both immediate employee relations issues and broader HR initiatives;
build a strong understanding of the business and become a valued extension of the team;
work flexibly through an on-demand consulting arrangement; and
bring your experience and judgement to a business that values practical, commercially sensible HR support.
