About the branch
The Office of the Victorian Government Solicitor (VGS) provides strategic, advisory and operational support to the VGS to enable effective leadership of VGSO and the delivery of high quality legal services to government.
The Office of the VGS also supports the Executive Leadership team, which consists of Assistant Victorian Government Solicitors, the Chief Operating Officer and the Director of People and Culture.
It acts as a central coordination point for executive decision making, governance and workflow, and engagement with senior stakeholders within VGSO and across government.
The Office is a small, high trust function comprising a Senior Executive Advisor and Executive Assistant, working closely with the VGS on complex, sensitive and time critical matters.
It operates in a fast paced, confidential environment requiring sound judgement, discretion, and a whole of government perspective.
About the role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Executive Advisor for a 16-month fixed-term opportunity. With proven public sector experience, you will provide strategic, high-level advice and executive support to the Victorian Government Solicitor (VGS) and Executive Leadership Team (ELT) across a broad range of complex, sensitive and organisation-wide matters
Based within the Office of the VGS, this highly visible and influential role is central to supporting executive decision-making, driving strategic projects, managing key communications, coordinating governance activities and delivering initiatives that advance VGSO's strategic objectives. Working closely with the VGS and ELT, you will act as a trusted advisor, providing insight and recommendations on emerging issues while ensuring the successful delivery of key organisational priorities. The role also has responsibility for leading and managing the Executive Assistant, ensuring the effective operation of the Office of the VGS and the delivery of high-quality executive support services.
Operating in a fast-paced and high-trust environment, you will leverage your sound judgement, political acumen and exceptional stakeholder management skills to navigate complex and confidential matters. As a member of the ELT, you will play a pivotal role in fostering cross-organisational collaboration, enabling effective executive leadership and translating strategic priorities into tangible organisational outcomes.
This is a unique opportunity for a strategic, relationship-focused executive advisor with a strong understanding of public sector operating environments to work at the centre of organisational leadership, governance and decision-making, contributing directly to the delivery of VGSO's strategic vision and priorities.
Responsibilities
- Provide high-level advice and executive support to the Victorian Government Solicitor (VGS) and Executive Leadership Team (ELT) on complex, sensitive and organisation-wide matters.
- Lead the preparation of high-quality briefs, submissions, presentations, correspondence and reports to support executive decision-making.
- Drive strategic projects and initiatives, providing recommendations and solutions to support VGSO's objectives and priorities.
- Coordinate governance and executive workflows, ensuring the quality, timeliness and effective progression of matters presented to the VGS and ELT.
- Monitor emerging government, policy and organisational issues, providing timely analysis, advice and insights to senior leaders.
- Develop and deliver communications on behalf of the VGS, to support organisational priorities, initiatives and change activities.
- Build and maintain trusted relationships with senior internal and external stakeholders to support collaboration, and positive organisational outcomes.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives across the Office of the VGS, enhancing governance, systems, processes and ways of working.
Skills and experience
- Proven public sector experience is essential, with a strong understanding of government operating environments, governance frameworks and strategic priorities.
- Demonstrated experience providing strategic advice and executive-level support on complex and organisation-wide matters, with the ability to navigate sensitive issues and competing priorities.
- Exceptional analytical, written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of preparing high-quality briefs, submissions, reports, presentations and recommendations for senior executives and decision-makers.
- Highly developed stakeholder management and influencing skills, with a proven ability to build credibility and trusted relationships with senior leaders and key stakeholders.
- Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving capability, with the ability to identify risks and opportunities and deliver practical, outcomes-focused solutions.
- Proven ability to support executive decision-making and deliver initiatives aligned to organisational objectives.
- Sound judgement, political acumen and a demonstrated ability to manage highly confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
- A collaborative and values-led leadership approach, with the ability to influence across all levels of an organisation and foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement and high performance.
