About the role:
The Commercial Director owns the ‘commercial lens’ across all technology investments, vendor relationships, and contract obligations, ensuring Ampol extracts maximum value from its technology spend while managing commercial risk with rigor and transparency.
This role demands a leader who combines deep commercial expertise with genuine technology fluency, someone who can speak the language of both the boardroom and the engineering floor. The ideal candidate brings a career with commercial transformation at an enterprise scale, complemented by a technical foundation that earns credibility with technology teams. They will have led commercial functions across complex, multi-category portfolios in regulated industries, and will bring the discipline of structured commercial methodologies together with the pragmatism required to operate effectively in a fast-moving technology environment.
This is a leadership role with direct people management accountability for a team of three, spanning contract management across Group TDD, and software asset management. The Commercial Director is expected to be a ‘player coach’ leading the team while personally driving strategic commercial outcomes at the most senior levels.
Key Responsibilities

Builds and embeds TDD's commercial management frameworks, templates, and governance to support Contract Owners across the full contract lifecycle, from mobilisation through closure.

Acts as a central advisory function, translating contract data into insights while supporting Contract Owners in managing performance, risk, and contract changes.

Establishes a vendor governance framework with scorecards, risk tracking, and segmentation-based engagement tailored to supplier criticality. Maintains portfolio-wide oversight of vendor compliance and performance, partnering with Procurement, Legal, and other stakeholders to align vendor strategy with enterprise policy and risk appetite.

Drives cost optimisation through spend analysis, benchmarking, and TCO modelling, and owns the TDD Productivity agenda with benefits tracking pipeline and executive reporting.

Provides independent assurance over contract lifecycle management, proactive renewals, and risk surfacing, alongside a software asset management strategy covering licensing compliance and cost reduction across SaaS and other models. Supports investment decisions through commercial due diligence and post-investment value checks.

Leads and develops a team spanning contract management, software asset management, and technology finance across AU and NZ.
Qualifications & Experience

Extensive senior experience leading commercial or financial governance in complex technology, managed services or digital environments.

A proven track record of building, transforming, and leading commercial functions at enterprise scale, with a demonstrable impact on cost optimization vendor performance.

Strong knowledge of technology contract structures, licensing models, including SaaS, perpetual, consumption-based and hybrid, and commercial frameworks including total cost of ownership, outcome-based pricing, and value-based contracting.

A technical foundation or strong technology fluency that enables credible engagement with technology teams, experience in IT delivery, systems, or technical roles is highly valued and differentiating.

Proven ability to engage and influence C-suite executives, board members, and senior stakeholders, translating complex commercial data into clear, actionable insights for strategic decision-making.

Experience leading commercial functions across both in-house and outsourced delivery models, including managing teams across multiple geographies and cost centers.

Relevant tertiary qualifications in commerce, finance, business, computer science, or related discipline. PRINCE2 or equivalent project management certification is a strong advantage
