Position Overview
A&P HOSPITALITY PTY LTD, trading as TOROS STEAK HOUSE, is seeking a skilled and experienced Chef to join our professional kitchen team in Mount Barker, South Australia. This is a full-time position offering a long-term opportunity for an experienced hospitality professional with strong culinary skills, supervisory capability, and a commitment to maintaining consistently high standards of food quality, presentation, hygiene, and kitchen operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, cook, season, and present dishes in accordance with established recipes, menu specifications, portion standards, and presentation requirements.
- Supervise food preparation and cooking activities to ensure consistency, quality, and efficient service.
- Assist with menu planning, menu development, and the introduction of new dishes where required.
- Estimate food requirements and assist in monitoring food and labour costs.
- Monitor the quality and freshness of ingredients and finished dishes.
- Coordinate kitchen operations during service periods and ensure meals are prepared and delivered in a timely manner.
- Supervise, train, mentor, and support chefs, cooks, kitchen hands, and other kitchen staff.
- Allocate duties to kitchen staff and monitor their performance during preparation and service.
- Assist with staff rostering and kitchen workflow planning as required.
- Maintain high standards of food preparation, portion control, presentation, and consistency.
- Ensure compliance with applicable food safety, hygiene, sanitation, and workplace health and safety requirements.
- Monitor food storage, refrigeration, temperature controls, labelling, stock rotation, and safe food handling practices.
- Manage and monitor stock levels and assist with ordering food, ingredients, and kitchen supplies.
- Inspect incoming food supplies for quality and suitability.
- Implement effective stock control and food-cost management procedures.
- Monitor and minimise food wastage while maintaining required quality standards.
- Ensure kitchen equipment, utensils, preparation areas, and storage facilities are maintained in a clean and hygienic condition.
- Assist in resolving operational issues arising during kitchen service.
- Take responsibility for kitchen operations in the absence of the Head Chef when required.
- Work collaboratively with restaurant management and front-of-house staff to ensure efficient service and a high standard of customer satisfaction.
Skills and Experience Required
- A relevant qualification in Commercial Cookery, Hospitality, or an equivalent discipline.
- A minimum of 3 years of relevant full-time professional experience in a commercial kitchen environment, preferably including experience as a Chef, Chef, or in a comparable senior kitchen position.
- Strong culinary preparation, cooking, and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated experience supervising and supporting kitchen staff.
- Strong understanding of commercial kitchen operations, food costing, stock control, and waste management.
- Sound knowledge of food safety, hygiene, and workplace health and safety requirements.
- Ability to maintain food quality and consistency during high-volume service periods.
- Strong organisational, leadership, communication, and time-management skills.
- Ability to prioritise tasks and coordinate multiple kitchen activities simultaneously.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a professional hospitality team.
- Ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced commercial kitchen environment.
