Primary objective
Under direction of the Principal/Business Manager, undertake varied roles and responsibilities to support a high standard of
maintenance and safety associated with the day to day physical operations of the school.
Context statement
Wanguri Primary School is located in the northern suburbs of Darwin and provides education to approximately
410 Preschool to Year 6 students. All teachers, staff and parents work collaboratively to maximise student learning
outcomes. The school facility is maintained internally and externally to a high standard in order to ensure a vibrant, engaging
and safe environment for all students, staff and community.
Key duties and responsibilities
• Under direction of the Principal/Business Manager ensure the maintenance, safety and security associated with the
physical condition of the school are upheld to a high standard.
- Inspect and unlock the school premises each morning and liaise with appropriate personnel to ensure safety and security
of buildings and grounds.
- Regularly inspect and undertake general repairs and maintenance to school buildings, fixtures and fittings that require
technical, general handyman or trade skills.
- Monitor and report any urgent and non-urgent minor repairs or defects, including overseeing repairs undertaken by
external contractors to ensure satisfactory completion.
- Action potential health and safety risks by immediately reporting or exercising sound judgement to resolve the issue.
- Carry out grounds maintenance tasks as required to ensure a high standard of presentation is upheld.
- Provide other operational support i.e. relocation/storage of furniture/equipment and courier services as required.
- Maintain personal work area in a neat, orderly and safe manner, including appropriate use, storage and maintenance of
tools and powered equipment.
- Prioritise and perform work tasks reliably, under limited supervision, whilst adhering to school and DoE policies.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated experience in building maintenance, grounds maintenance (on a large scale/site) and general handyman
duties with an ability to produce a high standard of finish.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of and working within workplace WHS policies and procedures.
3. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills when dealing with the public, contractors, school staff and
students and an ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures, whilst maintaining a high level of
confidentiality.
4. Demonstrated ability to work as a team member, take direction, work independently with limited supervision, displaying
initiative and flexibility and ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines.
5. Previous experience and training applicable to level of requirements for this position.
6. A current Northern Territory Drivers’ license

1. Current NT LR drivers licence
