Position Description: Tyre Fitter (Heavy Mining)
Primary Purpose of the Position
The OTR Tyre Fitter is responsible for the technical execution of tyre maintenance, fitment, and management for heavy earthmoving and mining fleets. The incumbent must ensure the mechanical integrity of wheel assemblies to maintain site safety and operational productivity.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
Technical Fitment & Mechanical Operations
- Assembly Management: Execute the removal, fitting, and replacement of OTR tyres and multi-piece rim components on ultra-class mining equipment (e.g., Haul Trucks, Loaders, Graders).
- High-Pressure Systems: Perform controlled inflation and deflation of tyres using calibrated manifolds, ensuring strict adherence to high-pressure safety boundaries and "Line of Fire" protocols.
- Bead & Rim Seating: Utilize specialized hydraulic bead breakers and rams to safely seat and unseat tyres from earthmover rims.
- Asset Salvage: Perform minor and major tyre repairs, including skiving and plugging, using cold or hot vulcanizing methods to industry standards.
Inspection, Auditing & Reporting
- Condition Monitoring: Conduct mandatory pre-shift and scheduled inspections of tyre carcasses for separations, impact damage, and irregular wear patterns.
- Technical Reporting: Maintain daily service logs and digital records via Tyre Management Software, capturing serial numbers (ID), tread depths (mm), and pressure readings (PSI).
- Compliance Auditing: Ensure all rim components (lock rings, flanges, and O-rings) are inspected for fatigue, cracks, or corrosion prior to fitment.
Specialized Equipment Operation
- Tooling Proficiency: Safe operation of high-torque hydraulic tooling, pneumatic wrenches, and jacking equipment (50T to 150T capacity).
- Mobile Plant: Operate tyre handlers and forklifts to maneuver components weighing several tonnes in workshop and field environments.
Safety, Risk & Compliance
- Isolation Protocols: Strictly adhere to site-specific "Lock Out Tag Out" (LOTO) and jacking/blocking procedures before commencing work on any vehicle.
- Risk Assessment: Complete mandatory "Take 5" or Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) documentation for every task, identifying specific hazards related to stored energy and heavy lifting.
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): Execute all tasks in accordance with the Company’s and the Client’s specific OTR Tyre Handling SOPs.
Occupational Requirements & Qualifications
- Certification: Certificate II in Automotive Tyre Servicing Technology (Heavy/OTR) or recognized equivalent trade experience.
- Licensing: Valid Unrestricted Manual Driver’s License; High Risk Work License (Forklift/LF) and Tyre Handler competency preferred.
- Physical Demands: Capacity to perform strenuous manual labor in extreme environments, including lifting, bending, and working at heights or in confined spaces.
- Site Readiness: Ability to pass and maintain "Fit for Work" status, including regular drug and alcohol screening and mining-standard medicals.
Performance Standards
- Quality: Zero rework required on fitments; all rim components cleaned and lubricated to specification.
- Safety: Zero Lost Time Injuries (LTI) or High-Potential Incidents resulting from improper jacking or inflation procedures.
- Accuracy: 100% accuracy in data entry for tyre tracking and serial number management.
Pay: $90,000.00 – $120,000.00 per year
Work Location: In person
