As an Aboriginal Healthcare Worker Trainee, you will be employed full-time by GEO Healthcare while we sponsor and support you to complete a nationally recognised qualification in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care.

As a Trainee Aboriginal Health Worker, you will play an important role in supporting the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal patients within a correctional healthcare environment. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team that is dedicated to delivering culturally responsive care and advocating for the unique cultural and healthcare needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

GEO Healthcare operates across all Victorian men's public prisons, delivering comprehensive primary healthcare services to people in prison.
GEO Healthcare is a subsidiary of The GEO Group Australia Pty Ltd, a company that has been providing correctional and healthcare services throughout Australia for more than 30 years.
During your traineeship, you will work under the supervision of experienced Aboriginal Health Workers and Aboriginal Health Practitioners, receiving ongoing support and mentoring throughout your learning journey.
Overall supervision of the traineeship program is provided by the Manager, Aboriginal Health within GEO Healthcare.
You will gain practical experience in:
- Delivering culturally safe healthcare services
- Supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients to access healthcare
- Health promotion and education
- Assisting with primary healthcare programs
- Working collaboratively with healthcare professionals
- Advocating for the cultural and health needs of Aboriginal patients
- Developing clinical skills within a professional healthcare environment
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be 18 years of age or older.
- Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
- Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.
(An applicant's race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under Section 14 of the Equal Opportunity Act.)
Applicants should also demonstrate:
- A genuine interest in pursuing a career in Aboriginal Health.
- A commitment to undertaking the Certificate IV in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice as part of the traineeship.
- An understanding of the health and social issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- The ability to engage and communicate respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.
GEO Healthcare will sponsor and support trainees to complete one of the following nationally recognised qualifications:
- Certificate III in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care
- Certificate IV in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice
Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) Approved Programs of Study.
18 months to 2 years
