The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking an Industry Supervisor to provide a critical role at Marngoneet Correctional Centre / Karreenga.
About the Business Unit
Marngoneet Correctional Centre and Karreenga Annex is a medium security facility that houses a mix of sentenced and remand men and is located 6km north-west of Lara, 20km from the centre of Geelong and about 70km from Melbourne. The role of the facility is to contain men in custody safely, securely and humanely, focusing on the individual needs of the men with the aim of providing a successful transition back into the community or on their continued journey through the prison system. The facility has a strong focus on achieving positive outcomes and provides a range of engaged services. Our highly skilled workforce provides supervision and case management and are dedicated to enhancing opportunities to strengthen prisoner pathways.
About the Role
Prison Industry Supervisors are team leaders in the prison environment. The roles require leadership, maturity, sound judgement and confidence in decision making, with developed capabilities to coach, mentor and motivate staff and prisoners. With highly developed communication and negotiation skills, the prison industry supervisor leads and manages industry staff to achieve program and service outcomes in a multidisciplinary team and rehabilitative environment.
This multifaceted role encompasses human resource management, including Performance Management, coaching and developing staff, OH&S requirements, E.E.O. legislation responsibilities, staff employment, training requirements and budget monitoring.
An important facet of their role involves liaising with internal staff and external stakeholders and preparation of analytical and informed contributions to develop and deliver programs and processes.
Custodial duties involve direction and supervision of teams in conducting searches, surveillance, observing and assessing prisoner behaviour, operating a variety of security and industrial equipment, collating information and preparing reports and management of critical incidents. Prison Industry Supervisors have a significant role to play in ensuring compliance with prison and commercial prison industry procedures and particularly with Occupational Health and Safety issues in industry areas.
At Marngoneet Correctional Centre a Prison Industry Supervisor plays an integral role in developing, implementing, re-enforcing, and reviewing practice and procedures relating to offender management and security management and implementation of offender management plans. They actively lead working parties and reference groups and provide advice through written reports to senior management.
Some of your duties will include:
- Supervising the operational aspects of the Marngoneet Correctional Centre - Karreenga Industries, to achieve commercial production targets and customer expectations, maintaining control of stock, materials, and financial records and providing an industry model workplace training environment.
- Leading and managing staff in the Marngoneet Industry areas to ensure the safety and security of prisoners, staff and any visitors. This includes appropriate levels of surveillance and interaction within the facility, and monitoring staff and prisoners for compliance with security and occupational health and safety procedures.
- Train, supervise and support staff in all aspects of prison industry operations including prisoner training and assessment, case management, program and service knowledge and involvement, maintenance of professional boundaries and contribution to prison and prison industry security management procedures.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Qualifications and/or demonstrated experience and skill in areas relevant to commercial industry, correctional legislation, program delivery and, or offender management is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated commitment to working with staff, prisoners and other service providers in the delivery of an integrated, whole of Justice approach to reducing re-offending.
- Ability to monitor and achieve targets in a complex trade or industrial environment including management of financial budgets, materials and suppliers' records and accounts, while maintaining work production schedules.
- Demonstrated ability to liaise with internal and external stakeholders and provide analytical informed contributions to develop and deliver programs and processes.
- An understanding of Lean / 5S processes.
Qualifications/requirements
- An appropriate trade qualification and/or relevant experience in an industry operating within a Correctional environment
- Trade qualification and/or relevant experience in one or more of the following industries: Timber, Metal or Horticulture.
- Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, and/or experience delivering training within a commercial production environment.
- Applicants must have successfully completed, or be willing to undertake, the Corrections Victoria Pre-Service Training Programme.
- Oracle Order Management system knowledge is highly desirable.
