The Position:
The Electrical Systems Specialist – Field Engineering is a hands-on technical expert responsible for the safety, reliability, and performance of mission-critical electrical infrastructure within a live data centre environment.
The role has a strong focus on UPS systems, battery infrastructure, and critical power distribution, while also supporting HV/LV systems, transformers, switchboards, generators, protection systems, and electrical controls.
Working across operations, engineering, and risk, the specialist provides field support during incidents, leads fault investigations, reviews switching procedures, and improves the technical capability of site teams.
Key Responsibilities
Electrical and UPS System Ownership
Act as the technical specialist for UPS systems, batteries, HV/LV distribution, transformers, switchboards, generators, and associated controls.
Maintain detailed knowledge of system design, operating modes, protection settings, redundancy, and recovery strategies.
Monitor UPS loading, battery condition, autonomy, alarms, and equipment performance.
Identify capacity, reliability, lifecycle, and single-point-of-failure risks.
Ensure electrical systems operate within approved safety, protection, and reliability limits.
Field Engineering and Fault Response
Provide hands-on technical support during UPS faults, electrical outages, protection trips, nuisance alarms, and abnormal operating conditions.
Lead fault isolation, technical diagnosis, and restoration planning.
Analyse UPS event logs, relay records, alarms, and power-monitoring data.
Support switching, UPS bypass operations, load transfers, energisation, commissioning, and post-incident recovery.
Provide clear technical direction to operations teams, contractors, and equipment vendors.
Engineering Governance
Author, review, and approve:
Electrical switching procedures
EOPs, MOPs, and SOPs
Isolation and energisation plans
Temporary operating procedures
Risk assessments and recovery plans
Ensure procedures align with system configuration, protection coordination, discrimination, arc-flash requirements, and equipment limitations.
Improve procedures based on incidents, operational feedback, and lessons learned.
Reliability and Technical Leadership
Lead or support electrical incident investigations and Root Cause Analysis.
Provide technical input into maintenance, asset replacement, capacity planning, and system upgrades.
Review commissioning plans and witness UPS, battery, generator, and integrated systems testing.
Coach site teams on UPS operation, electrical switching, fault response, and safe systems of work.
Must-have Qualifications:
Essential:
Trade, diploma, or degree qualification in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
Extensive experience with mission-critical electrical systems (data centres, utilities, hospitals, industrial facilities, or similar)
Strong hands-on switching and fault-finding capability
Experience with protection coordination and discrimination studies
Proven experience authoring and reviewing switching procedures
Strong understanding of redundancy philosophies (N, N+1, 2N, etc.)
Desirable:
Desirable Experience
Authorised HV switching experience.
Experience in live data centre operations.
UPS manufacturer training or certification.
Experience with VRLA, lithium-ion, nickel-cadmium, or other battery technologies.
Commissioning and energisation experience.
Familiarity with relay configuration, power-quality analysis, EPMS, SCADA, or BMS platforms.
Experience leading or contributing to Root Cause Analysis investigations.
