About the position
The Victorian Government has partnered with La Trobe University to establish the Australian Centre for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Medical Innovation (ACAMI).
Established in 2024, ACAMI is a collaborative research, clinical trials and workforce development centre operating at the intersection of AI and medical innovation. The Centre supports local medical research institutes and industry partners, delivering new and additional capabilities to ensure Victoria’s world-leading medical innovation and life sciences research ecosystem maintains pace with global standards and opportunities as AI capability develops.
The appointee will support ACAMI research programs, contribute to engagement with industry, clinical, health-sector and medical research partners, and work with ACAMI’s Director, Development, to help translate research outcomes into practical tools, software, prototypes, workflows and partner-facing applications.
Duties at this level:
- Conduct and contribute to high-quality research in AI-enabled medical, biomedical, biological and health innovation under the direction of ACAMI’s Director & Chief Scientist and senior researchers, contributing to new methods, validated applications and practical solutions for significant medical and health challenges.
- Work with ACAMI’s Director & Chief Scientist, ACAMI’s Director, Development, senior researchers, and external partners to help scope real-world medical, biomedical, biological, clinical and health challenges; contribute to co-designed research approaches; and develop, validate or document AI-enabled tools, software, models, workflows, prototypes or partner-facing outputs.
- Draft competitive research proposals and contribute to external funding initiatives and partner-funded projects, including through industry partnerships, government agencies, health-sector partners, or equivalent mechanisms.
Skills and knowledge:
- Completion of a PhD or equivalent accreditation and standing recognised by the University/profession as appropriate for the relevant discipline area, such as AI/ML for medical/biomedical innovation, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a related field.
- An established record of high-quality research applying AI/ML, computational, data-intensive or related approaches to medical and health challenges, including in AI-enabled medical, biomedical, biological, clinical, health or related innovation areas.
- Demonstrated ability to draft competitive research proposals and contribute to external funding initiatives, in collaboration with senior researchers, industry partners, government agencies, health-sector partners, or other external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality research outputs, including publications in top-tier AI, bioinformatics, computational biology, digital health or interdisciplinary venues; presentations at relevant conferences; and/or contributions to software, tools, datasets, prototypes, implementation materials or partner-facing deliverables.
