About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Team Leader – Youth Justice to join our Individual Support and Transition Service (ISTS), supporting young people within Banksia Hill Detention Centre and/or Unit 18 at Casuarina Prison.
This is a rewarding opportunity to work alongside a multidisciplinary team to support young people with complex needs, helping them develop emotional regulation, build resilience and successfully transition back into the general custodial population.
Working within a trauma-informed, strengths-based and culturally safe framework, you will provide mentoring and therapeutic support to young people aged 10–18 years who may present with self-harm, suicidal ideation, aggression, violence, complex needs or other vulnerabilities. You will also play a key role in monitoring service quality, coordinating with stakeholders, preparing reports and contributing to continuous improvement across the program.
Key responsibilities include:

Provide mentoring and therapeutic support to young people with complex behavioural and emotional needs.

Develop individual engagement plans that promote positive behaviour, emotional regulation and participation in education, recreation and other meaningful activities.

Work collaboratively with Youth Custodial Operations, Psychological Services and the Case Planning Unit to support positive outcomes.

Prepare high-quality case notes, reports, data and program documentation within required timeframes.

Support a collaborative team culture through reflective practice, clinical supervision and stakeholder engagement.

Build positive relationships with young people, custodial staff and external stakeholders while maintaining professional boundaries and ethical practice.

Advocate for the needs of Aboriginal young people through culturally safe and trauma-informed practice.

You'll Need
-
Degree or Diploma in Social Services, Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs, Youth Work or a related discipline, or significant relevant experience.

Demonstrated experience supporting at-risk young people with complex needs.

Strong understanding of strengths-based, trauma-informed and youth-centred practice.

Experience working with Aboriginal young people and families with cultural understanding, respect and sensitivity.

Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.

Experience working with challenging behaviours and advocating for young people within a justice or human services setting.

Knowledge of youth justice, child protection, mental health or related service systems will be highly regarded.

Knowledge of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and the impacts of intergenerational trauma and the Stolen Generations is desirable, or a willingness to undertake training.
Pre-employment requirements:

Current C or A Class Driver's Licence.

National Police Clearance (issued within the last three months).

Department of Justice Clearance.
