Job Title: Fitter
Position Summary
The Fitter is responsible for the installation, fitting, maintenance, servicing, fault diagnosis, repair and overhaul of mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic plant and equipment used within water and wastewater treatment systems.
The role is responsible for maintaining the mechanical integrity and reliability of water and wastewater treatment plant equipment to support safe, efficient and continuous day-to-day operations.
Responsibilities
- Carry out mechanical fitting, installation, servicing, maintenance and repair of water and wastewater treatment plant and associated equipment.
- Maintain mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems to ensure plant reliability and operational performance.
- Diagnose equipment faults and undertake preventative, corrective and breakdown maintenance.
- Install, overhaul and repair pumps, valves, gearboxes, blowers, screens, conveyors, mixers, hydraulic equipment, pipework and other mechanical plant.
- Ensure fitting and maintenance activities are completed in accordance with engineering specifications, manufacturer requirements and workplace safety procedures.
- Assist with the installation, commissioning and ongoing maintenance of new and modified water and wastewater treatment equipment.
Tasks & Duties
- Study and interpret engineering drawings, mechanical drawings, hydraulic and pneumatic schematics, equipment manuals, specifications and maintenance instructions to determine suitable materials, tools, methods and sequences of work.
- Install, assemble, fit, align and maintain mechanical equipment used in water and wastewater treatment and pumping systems, including pumps, valves, gearboxes, blowers, screens, conveyors, mixers and sludge-handling equipment.
- Fit and assemble fabricated metal components, mechanical parts and sub-assemblies used in water and wastewater treatment plant and associated mechanical systems.
- Inspect and check mechanical components, fabricated parts and assemblies for correct dimensions, alignment, clearances, tolerances and fit using appropriate precision measuring instruments.
- Set up and operate workshop machinery and tools, including lathes, drilling machines, grinders, presses and cutting equipment, to manufacture, modify and repair mechanical components.
- Cut, thread, bend, fabricate, assemble and install process pipework, hydraulic lines, pneumatic lines, hoses and associated fittings used throughout water and wastewater treatment facilities.
- Install, maintain and repair hydraulic equipment and components, including hydraulic cylinders, pumps, motors, valves, hoses, fittings, manifolds and hydraulic power units.
- Diagnose faults in hydraulic systems and undertake repairs, component replacement, pressure testing and general maintenance as required.
- Install, maintain and repair valves, actuators, pipe fittings, strainers, flexible connections and other mechanical components associated with water, wastewater, sludge and chemical dosing systems.
- Diagnose mechanical faults and perform preventative, corrective and breakdown maintenance on pumps, motors, gearboxes, blowers, conveyors, screens, mixers, compressors and other plant equipment.
- Dismantle, inspect, overhaul, repair and reassemble mechanical equipment, replacing worn or damaged components including bearings, seals, shafts, couplings, impellers, gaskets, bushes and mechanical seals.
- Carry out equipment alignment, shaft and coupling checks, lubrication, adjustment and condition inspections to ensure the reliable and efficient operation of rotating machinery.
- Inspect plant and equipment to identify abnormal operating conditions, including excessive vibration, unusual noise, leakage, overheating, pressure loss, wear or reduced mechanical performance, and undertake appropriate corrective action.
- Assist with the installation, commissioning, testing and operational maintenance of new or modified mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment and water/wastewater treatment systems.
- Erect and install mechanical machinery, treatment equipment, pumping equipment and pipework on-site, including positioning, levelling, alignment, fitting and securing equipment in accordance with drawings and specifications.
- Carry out scheduled inspections and preventative maintenance to identify worn components and potential mechanical failures before breakdown occurs.
- Remove, repair, replace and reinstall defective plant components and equipment to minimise operational downtime.
- Select appropriate tools, replacement components, seals, bearings, fittings and materials required to complete mechanical repairs and maintenance activities.
- Perform testing and operational checks following maintenance and repair activities to confirm equipment has been correctly assembled, aligned and returned to safe operating condition.
- Work safely around water and wastewater treatment equipment and comply with site safety requirements, including plant isolation, lockout/tagout (LOTO), permit-to-work systems and confined-space procedures where applicable.
- Maintain workshop tools, machinery and equipment in a safe and serviceable condition and maintain a clean and organised work area.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, equipment repairs, replacement parts and plant condition.
- Report equipment defects, recurring faults, abnormal operating conditions and potential mechanical failures to the responsible supervisor and assist in determining appropriate corrective actions.
Skills & Experience
The successful candidate will ideally possess:
- Relevant trade qualification in Mechanical Fitting, Fitting and Turning, or an equivalent mechanical trade.
- Demonstrated experience in mechanical fitting, maintenance and repair of industrial plant and equipment.
- Experience with water and wastewater treatment plant, pumping systems or process equipment is highly regarded.
- Experience with hydraulic and pneumatic systems, fault finding and component repair.
- Experience maintaining pumps, valves, gearboxes, bearings, seals, couplings and rotating equipment.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, mechanical drawings, hydraulic schematics and equipment manuals.
- Ability to use precision measuring equipment and mechanical fitting tools.
- Experience operating workshop machinery and equipment.
- Strong mechanical fault-finding and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to undertake preventative and breakdown maintenance independently.
- Strong commitment to workplace health and safety.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a maintenance or project team.
- Current driver's licence and ability to undertake site-based work as required.
Work Environment
The position involves a combination of workshop and site-based mechanical fitting activities, with work undertaken on water and wastewater treatment facilities, pumping systems, hydraulic equipment and associated industrial plant.
The role may involve working around operating machinery, process pipework, treatment chemicals and wastewater infrastructure and may require work in confined spaces or other controlled work environments in accordance with applicable training, permits and safety procedures.
Pay: $80,000.00 – $100,000.00 per year
