We are seeking an experienced Chef to join the team casual 25+ hours per week to start across days and evening shifts. Ela is located on the waterfront dining precinct of Cairns. Join our talented friendly and hardworking team!

Ela is an newly established restaurant in Cairns City with a focus on quality dishes with delicious flavours and beautiful presentation of the food and drinks. The focus is on local ingredients utilising the very best available.
The Role
As an experienced Chef you will report to the Head Chef and Sous Chef and assume overall responsibility for your section within the restaurant, being a team player is paramount to be successful in the role. Your primary responsibilities will include:
- Preparing, seasoning, cooking and plating dishes as per the recipes in a timely manner
- Prepping ingredients across all areas in the kitchen
- Ensuring menu comprehension across the restaurant
- Plating all dishes in appropriate portions as per menu card photos as well as including any sides, gravies, sauces and garnishes as per the kitchen docket.
- Arranging the purchasing and pricing of food
- Assist with estimating food and labour costs
- Consistent monitoring quality of dishes at all stages of preparation and presentation
- Discussing and assisting with the correction of food preparation issues with Managers, kitchen and waiting staff
- Demonstrating techniques and advising on cooking procedures
- Explaining and enforcing hygiene regulations
- Assisting with the selection and training of staff
- Maintaining records of stock levels and insuring food wastage is at a minimum
- Ensuring kitchen area and equipment complies with health regulations and are clean, functional and of suitable appearance
- Experience regulating temperatures of ovens, grills and other cooking equipment
- Systematically logging fridge and freezer temperatures as well as ensuring food is stored appropriately to exceed food safety guidelines
- Ability to train and supervise kitchen staff of a lower skill level

- Maintaining a clean operation, ensuring compliance with Food Safety Standards and equipment maintenance
About you
You must be an experienced and talented chef, highly motivated, and able to work autonomously in a fast-paced environment. If you enjoy variety in your day and are passionate about food as well as delivering quality dishes with attention to detail - then this is the role for you!
To be successful in this position you will have:
- 3 + Years as a Chef de Partie
- Ideally a Tertiary Qualifications eg. Cert 4 in Commercial Cookery Diploma or Culinary degree in Hospitality or similar
- Demonstrated experience working within a similar position in a busy, high volume kitchen
- Effective communication skills and work ethic with your team, management and suppliers
- Strong work ethic and interest in your craft
- Flare, enthusiasm and passion to create quality dishes
Availability
- Available to work weekdays and weekends
- Immediate start
- Living in Cairns long term or an absolute minimum of 6 months
Pay: $36.81 – $44.18 per hour
