TJ O’Brien Investments is a family-owned irrigation and broadacre farming enterprise operating within the Walgett Shire of New South Wales. Our business produces irrigated cotton together with dryland wheat, barley and chickpeas using modern farming practices and a fleet of well-maintained, GPS-guided agricultural machinery.
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Agricultural Mobile Plant Operator to join our team on a full-time, permanent basis. This position plays an important role in supporting all aspects of crop production through the safe, efficient and competent operation of modern agricultural machinery across our farming operations.
About the Role
The successful applicant will be responsible for the safe operate a range of agricultural mobile plant and equipment to support seasonal farming activities including land preparation, sowing, spraying, fertiliser application, harvesting and cotton picking. The role requires a high level of machinery operation, attention to safety, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
During peak seasonal periods, applicants must be willing to work additional hours to meet operational requirements.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to
- Safe operation of a range of GPS-guided and precision farming machinery, including tractors, seeders, sprayers, spreaders, cotton pickers, harvesters and other agricultural mobile plant to undertake land preparation, sowing, spraying, fertiliser application and harvesting operations.
- Prepare land for cropping through cultivation, ploughing, rolling and other soil preparation activities.
- Conduct daily pre-start inspections, routine servicing and preventative maintenance of machinery, and identify and report mechanical faults.
- Calibrating and adjusting machinery to ensure accurate application of seed, chemicals and fertiliser.
- Transport agricultural machinery, equipment and farm inputs between work sites as required. Completing machinery maintenance records, production records and daily work logs.
- Following all workplace health and safety (WHS) procedures and maintaining a safe working environment.
- Working collaboratively with farm management and other staff to achieve seasonal production targets.
Skills, Qualifications and Experience
To be successful in this role you will have:
- A minimum of one (1) year of full-time experience (or equivalent) operating agricultural mobile plant and machinery in a broadacre cropping or irrigated farming environment.
- Demonstrated experience operating agricultural mobile plant in a broadacre cropping or irrigated farming environment.
- Experience operating machinery such as tractors, sprayers, seeders, harvesters, cotton pickers or similar agricultural equipment.
- Mechanical aptitude with the ability to carry out routine servicing and basic maintenance of machinery.
- Experience with GPS-guided or auto-steer machinery
- A sound understanding of safe machinery operating practices and workplace health and safety requirements.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team.
- The ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and undertake physically demanding work when required.
- A current driver's licence (essential).
