Joining Arup
Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.
The Specialist Technology, Analytics and Research (STAR) team at Arup brings together brilliant and diverse technical specialists to deliver innovative, practical, and cost-effective solutions across building design, infrastructure, automotive, rail, and energy sectors among others.
This role focuses on structural engineering, advanced structural analysis, and structural dynamics, providing analysis, site measurements, design, and consulting to enhance the team’s expertise and project portfolio. Our projects are usually small in nature, giving the successful candidate the ability to work closely with the senior on the project and take on some client management and PM responsibilities.
The Opportunity
- Identify the most appropriate approach to analyse structures and complete the analysis, using hand calculations, simplified models, or detailed numerical models.
- Carry out advanced structural analysis using LS-Dyna to solve complex engineering problems, including structure-soil interaction.
- Assess existing buildings and infrastructure to inform design or refurbishment decisions.
- Perform seismic assessments of buildings and infrastructure.
- Undertake FEA-based fatigue assessments of steel connections.
- Conduct blast and fire assessments for structures, including above-ground buildings, bridges and tunnels.
- Evaluate vibration in buildings, including for applications such as dance studios, gyms, or wind-induced motion.
- Conduct modal dynamic testing, vibration measurements, and site inspections of buildings and structures.
Is this role right for you?
- Hold recognised tertiary qualifications in Engineering.
- Have substantial consulting and technical experience (6+ years in industry) in structural engineering and/or finite element analysis of structures and related areas.
- Have 5+ years’ experience working with LS-DYNA (and/or Ansys, Abaqus or similar) and GSA and/or Strand7. This experience should include mesh creation, model definition, and interrogation/verification of analysis results.
- Be self-driven: able to take ownership of tasks, deliver on time, communicate delays or issues, and proactively seek knowledge through research, team support, or your broader network.
- Have experience in structural design, not necessarily limited to a civil/structural degree (mechanical, aeronautical/aerospace considered equivalently trained).
- Possess strong written communication skills, including report writing.
