Introduction:
The Opportunity
Carey Baptist College is seeking a passionate Secondary Food Science and Technology Teacher to join our Harrisdale Campus team for the 2027 year.
This is an opportunity to teach in a learning area where students can see, create, test and apply what they are learning. From food preparation and nutrition through to sustainability, food production, consumer choices and hospitality skills, you will help students understand the role food plays in their own lives, families, communities and future pathways.
You will be part of a team that values learning that is practical without losing its depth. We want students to leave the Food Science classroom with more than a finished product. We want them to develop independence, creativity, resilience, safe work habits and pride in what they can achieve.
The ability to teach a Certificate II in Community Services would be highly desirable. This provides an exciting opportunity for the right teacher to support students exploring people-focused career pathways and to help them connect their learning with service, wellbeing, community and future employment.
What You’ll Be Doing
You will plan and deliver engaging Food Science and Technology learning experiences for Secondary students, creating a classroom where students are encouraged to ask questions, solve problems and learn through doing.
Your work will include:
Designing practical, well-sequenced lessons that connect food science, nutrition, food preparation, sustainability and consumer awareness.
Creating a safe, inclusive and well-organised kitchen environment where students can confidently develop practical skills.
Teaching students how to plan, prepare, evaluate and improve their work, while building an understanding of hygiene, food safety and responsible kitchen practices.
Helping students connect Food Science and Technology learning with real-life decisions, future study and employment pathways.
Assessing student progress and providing feedback that helps students understand both what they are doing well and what they can improve.
Working collaboratively with colleagues to develop meaningful curriculum, share ideas and contribute to the wider Technologies learning area.
Building positive relationships with students and supporting them to participate, persevere and take ownership of their learning.
Where relevant, contributing to the delivery of Certificate II in Community Services and supporting students to explore vocational pathways.
What Matters Most
Food Science and Technology is often where students discover that they are capable of more than they thought.
Some students will walk into your classroom already confident in the kitchen. Others may be learning how to hold a knife safely, follow a process, work with others or recover when something does not go to plan. Your ability to create a calm, structured and encouraging environment will matter just as much as your subject expertise.
We are looking for a teacher who can balance high expectations with genuine care. Someone who can make practical learning feel purposeful, help students see the relevance of their work, and build the confidence that comes from mastering a new skill.
What You Will Bring
A committed Christian faith and a willingness to actively support the College’s mission, Statement of Faith and values.
A recognised teaching qualification and current registration, or eligibility for registration, with the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia.
Demonstrated capacity to teach Food Science and Technology in a way that is engaging, practical and responsive to different student needs.
A strong understanding of food safety, hygiene, kitchen management and safe practical learning environments.
A genuine interest in food, nutrition, hospitality, sustainability and the role these areas play in everyday life.
The ability to build positive relationships with young people and create classrooms where students feel safe to learn, contribute and grow.
A collaborative approach, with a willingness to contribute to curriculum development and the broader life of the College.
The ability to teach a Certificate II in Community Services, or a willingness to obtain the relevant qualifications and vocational education requirements, would be highly regarded.
