Full-Time Lead Driver | Iconic Sydney Bakery
At Bourke Street Bakery, we are an iconic Sydney bakery renowned for producing high-quality artisan bread, pastries, pies and sausage rolls. Every day, our logistics team ensures our products are delivered safely and on time to our network of stores across Sydney.
Our delivery team is small but highly valued, and we take pride in our commitment to reliability, teamwork and exceptional customer service. We are seeking an experienced Lead Driver to lead our delivery operations while remaining hands-on by completing a daily delivery run.
Role Overview
Reporting to the Operations Manager, you will work closely with the Operations, Production and Warehouse Managers to ensure the smooth and efficient distribution of products across our retail network.
This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for leading a team of approximately five drivers operating across a seven-day delivery schedule. You will coordinate driver rosters, manage daily logistics, oversee fleet maintenance and compliance, and drive continuous improvement within the transport operation.
This is a full-time position, working 38 hours per week, Tuesday to Saturday, between 12:30 am to 9:30 am.
Key Responsibilities
- Complete a scheduled delivery run each shift.
- Lead, coach and support a small team of delivery drivers.
- Prepare and manage weekly driver rosters.
- Organise replacement drivers to cover annual leave, personal leave and unexpected absences.
- Assist with the recruitment, onboarding and training of new drivers, including company procedures and customer service expectations.
- Ensure all drivers comply with company policies, road transport legislation and Chain of Responsibility requirements.
- Promote a strong Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) culture, ensuring compliance with PPE requirements, including safety footwear and high-visibility clothing.
- Monitor driver performance and provide coaching and feedback.
- Conduct regular team meetings and maintain effective communication with drivers and management.
- Coordinate vehicle servicing, repairs and preventative maintenance.
- Ensure company vehicles are clean, roadworthy and maintained to a high standard, including weekly cab cleaning.
- Maintain accurate records, timesheets and compliance documentation.
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve delivery systems, efficiencies and service levels.
About You
You are an organised, reliable and proactive leader who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment and leading by example.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- A current unrestricted Australian Driver Licence.
- A clean driving history with no licence suspensions or serious traffic offences.
- An online driving history report (required during the recruitment process).
- Previous experience in transport, logistics or food distribution.
- Demonstrated experience leading or supervising a small team.
- Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office and email.
- Experience using WhatsApp or similar communication platforms.
- The ability to work independently and make sound decisions.
- A positive attitude and strong commitment to teamwork and customer service.
Success in this role will be measured by your ability to:
- On-time deliveries: Ensure deliveries are completed on time across all stores.
- Delivery accuracy: Achieve zero avoidable delivery errors by ensuring all products are correctly checked, loaded and delivered to the correct store, with discrepancies identified and resolved before the vehicle leaves the depot.
- Roster reliability: Maintain a well-planned roster with appropriate driver coverage and minimal last-minute disruption.
- Driver compliance: Maintain 100% compliance with required WHS procedures, PPE, licensing and company policies.
- Fleet standards: Ensure trucks are clean, roadworthy, serviced and maintained to the required standard.
- Accurate administration: Ensure timesheets, delivery records, vehicle records and other required documentation are completed accurately and on time.
- Team performance: Build a reliable, accountable delivery team that communicates effectively and takes ownership of delivery accuracy and customer service.
- Continuous improvement: Identify recurring delivery problems and implement practical solutions to improve the reliability and efficiency of the operation.
Location
Due to the early morning start, applicants should live within approximately one hour of Banksmeadow.
