Primary objective
As part of a multi-disciplinary primary health care team provide culturally appropriate support and education to reduce
uptake of smoking and exposure to second hand smoke, increase smoking cessation and prevent and reduce vaping.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Work in partnership with Outreach team members and communities to advocate and facilitate the delivery of culturally
appropriate anti-tobacco and vaping interventions, program and activities.
2. Assist and support families to develop their capacity to support members who are experiencing problems related to
tobacco, vaping and any other nicotine replacement smoking devices.
3. Discuss smoking and vaping with families, community members and local organisation to establish, maintain and improve
smoke-free rules to protect children and community members from second hand smoke, including at community events.
4. Work in partnership with clinic staff to explore pathways for community members to receive smoking cessation support
and nicotine replacement smoking devices.
5. Participate in and support the delivery of community development programs with internal and external stakeholders.
6. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to work being
undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrate a good understanding and knowledge of tobacco, vaping and any other nicotine replacement smoking
devices, issues and current treatment practices.
2. Ability to communicate effectively with community members and service providers with an understanding of working
within a culturally and linguistically diverse environment, especially pertaining to Aboriginal communities.
3. Demonstrate appropriate interpersonal, communication and organisational skills, which have resulted in an ability to work
as an effective part of a multi-disciplinary team.
4. Ability to participate in education and/or training to improve knowledge around tobacco, vaping and any other nicotine
replacement smoking devices within the community.
5. Demonstrate a high level of administrative skills, including written reports skills and effective use of information
technology.
6. Hold a current Northern Territory manual drivers’ licence and willingness to travel by road and in light aircraft to remote
communities.
Desirable
1. Experience working within a remote community delivering primary health care programs.
2. Previous experience in a Northern Territory Primary Health Care community setting.
