Position purpose
The Motor Mechanic (General) is responsible for diagnosing, maintaining, servicing and repairing petrol-powered and light motor vehicles.
The employee will perform skilled mechanical work on vehicle engines and associated mechanical systems, including transmissions, steering, suspension, braking, cooling and fuel systems. The position requires the competent use of mechanical tools, electronic diagnostic equipment, manufacturer specifications and workshop repair information.
Key duties and responsibilities
The Motor Mechanic will:
- Inspect motor vehicles and discuss reported faults, performance concerns and service requirements with customers, drivers or workshop personnel.
- Detect and diagnose mechanical, electrical and electronic faults in vehicle engines and associated components using road tests, visual inspections, scan tools, diagnostic computers, pressure gauges, multimeters and other testing equipment.
- Read and interpret diagnostic trouble codes, live vehicle data, manufacturer repair procedures, technical service information and wiring diagrams.
- Test vehicle components and systems to determine the cause and extent of mechanical faults before commencing repairs.
- Dismantle and remove engine assemblies, transmissions, steering mechanisms, suspension components, braking systems and other mechanical assemblies where required.
- Inspect dismantled components for wear, damage, deterioration, incorrect operation or failure and determine appropriate repair or replacement requirements.
- Repair, replace, reassemble and adjust worn or defective mechanical components using appropriate workshop tools, machinery and manufacturer-approved procedures.
- Carry out engine repairs, including work involving cylinder heads, timing systems, cooling systems, lubrication systems, fuel-delivery systems, intake systems and exhaust-related mechanical components.
- Service, repair and replace transmission, clutch and driveline components, including automatic and manual transmission-related mechanical parts where within the employee’s competence.
- Inspect, service and repair steering and suspension systems, including shock absorbers, struts, control arms, bushes, wheel bearings, steering racks and related components.
- Inspect, service and repair braking systems, including brake pads, discs, drums, hydraulic components and associated mechanical parts.
- Perform scheduled and preventative maintenance, including engine-oil and filter replacement, fluid inspections, cooling-system servicing, drive-belt replacement, spark-plug replacement and other manufacturer-specified service procedures.
- Tune engines and adjust engine-control or mechanical systems where required to improve performance, fuel efficiency and correct operation.
- Carry out wheel, tyre and basic alignment-related mechanical inspections where connected to suspension, steering or vehicle repair work.
- Test repaired vehicles and components to confirm that faults have been rectified and that vehicles operate safely and according to manufacturer specifications.
- Conduct pre-repair and post-repair road tests where authorised and necessary.
- Identify additional mechanical defects or safety concerns discovered during servicing and report recommended repairs to the Workshop Manager or authorised customer-service personnel.
- Prepare accurate job cards, diagnostic findings, inspection reports, parts requirements, labour records and completed-work descriptions.
- Estimate the type and quantity of parts, consumables and labour required for assigned mechanical repairs.
- Use workshop-management and vehicle-diagnostic software to record repair information, access technical data and document completed work.
- Maintain, service and correctly use mechanical tools, diagnostic equipment, workshop machinery and lifting equipment.
- Follow occupational health and safety requirements when using vehicle hoists, jacks, power tools, compressed air, chemicals and other workshop equipment.
- Maintain a clean, organised and safe work area and dispose of oils, fluids, filters, batteries and other automotive waste in accordance with workplace procedures.
- Comply with manufacturer specifications, workplace policies, environmental requirements and applicable Victorian automotive repair standards.
- Provide limited technical guidance to apprentices or junior workshop employees when directed, while remaining primarily responsible for performing hands-on motor-mechanic duties.
- Perform other closely related motor-mechanic duties that are consistent with the nominated occupation of Motor Mechanic (General), ANZSCO 321211.
Required qualifications and experience
The successful employee must possess:
- An Australian Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology or an equivalent relevant overseas automotive qualification; and/or
- Demonstrated experience diagnosing, servicing and repairing light motor vehicles;
- Competence using automotive scan tools and electronic diagnostic equipment;
- Knowledge of petrol engines, transmissions, braking, steering, suspension, cooling and fuel systems;
- Ability to interpret technical repair information and manufacturer specifications;
- Ability to complete accurate workshop and repair documentation;
- A current and valid driver licence; and
- Any Victorian registration, licensing or authorisation required for the particular work performed.

Work environment
The position is predominantly workshop-based and involves:
- Standing, bending, lifting and working underneath vehicles;
- Operating vehicle hoists, hand tools, power tools and diagnostic equipment;
- Handling automotive oils, fluids and mechanical components;
- Performing road tests where necessary and authorised; and
- Working in accordance with workshop safety and environmental procedures.

- Accuracy of fault diagnosis;
- Quality and reliability of mechanical repairs;
- Compliance with manufacturer repair procedures;
- Productivity and completion of work within reasonable allocated times;
- Accuracy of job cards and workshop records;

- Reduction of avoidable repeat repairs;
- Care of customer and company vehicles; and
- Compliance with workplace policies and lawful directions.
Pay: $97,000.00 per year
