Engineering Manager, Squad-Based Delivery
This position is based in Brisbane, Australia.
What We Offer
This is the central leadership role in Opengear’s squad-based engineering model. You’ll lead 6-9 engineers across 2-3 domain squads—owning their delivery outcomes, backlog quality, and career development—while building the self-organising, Kanban-oriented culture that will define how Opengear delivers software for years to come. This is a leadership role that asks you to step back from day-to-day technical contribution and invest your focus where it matters most: coaching your teams, preparing high-quality work, and removing everything that stands between your squads and uninterrupted delivery.
What You Will Do
- Own delivery outcomes for 2-3 squads of 3–4 engineers each, managing capacity, domain coverage, and backlog quality across both feature delivery and support rotation cycles
- Lead feature refinement from initial requirements to squad-ready stories—working collaboratively with SMEs within your squads to ensure work is well-scoped, correctly sized, and genuinely ready before it enters the queue
- Coach squads toward self-organization: running ceremonies autonomously, self-diagnosing impediments, and owning their own continuous improvement without requiring the EM to facilitate
- Manage support rotation scheduling for your squads, ensuring a prepared backlog of feature work is ready for squads returning from rotation so delivery resumes immediately
- Build domain depth and cross-skilling across your squads over time, identifying knowledge gaps and developing structured plans to close them
- Conduct regular 1:1s, set and track clear goals, and actively develop each engineer’s career—including identifying and preparing engineers for tech lead responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Solutions PO, product stakeholders, and peer EMs on feature planning, priority alignment, and cross-squad dependencies
Who You Are and What You Bring
- Engineering manager with a demonstrated track record of leading small, high-performing delivery teams
- Comfortable leading without being in every meeting—you build team autonomy and self-sufficiency, not dependency on your presence
- Strong instinct for backlog quality and feature refinement; you know what ‘squad-ready’ looks like and can build collaborative processes to get there reliably
- Familiar with Kanban or flow-based delivery models; you understand throughput, cycle time, and queue health, and you use them to manage delivery—not just report on it
- Technically credible enough to assess work complexity, challenge sizing, and coach engineers through implementation trade-offs
- Proven record of developing engineers toward senior and tech lead capability
- Clear communicator who can work across product, engineering, and support contexts without losing signal
Desired But Not Required
- Familiarity with Opengear’s product domains (Lighthouse, NGCS, OGCS, OEM)
- Experience facilitating retrospectives and driving measurable improvement in team practices
- Exposure to flow metrics: cycle time, throughput, queue depth, and delivery forecasting
