The Opportunity
At Vocus, we're building the critical infrastructure that keeps Australia connected. As one of Australia's leading telecommunications providers, we operate extensive fibre networks, subsea cables and data centre assets that power businesses, governments and communities across the country.
We're looking for an experienced and strategic Head of ESG to lead the next phase of Vocus' environmental, social and governance journey. This is a highly visible leadership role responsible for driving our ESG strategy, strengthening governance and reporting, and delivering meaningful outcomes for our customers, shareholders, employees and communities.
Leading a small and high-performing team, you'll work across every part of the business to embed ESG into decision-making, investment priorities and long-term value creation. You'll also partner closely with senior executives, Board members, shareholders, customers, industry bodies and external advisors to ensure Vocus continues to mature its sustainability performance and reporting.
What you'll be doing
- Lead delivery of Vocus’ ESG strategy and roadmap, including performance tracking, governance and continuous improvement.
- Lead Vocus’ climate and net zero agenda, including Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions reduction, supplier engagement, transition planning, carbon accounting and assurance.
- Lead Vocus’ digital inclusion strategy, working with program partners and internal teams to improve access, affordability and capability outcomes for First Nations Australians.
- Oversee ESG reporting and disclosure obligations, including ASRS, NGERS, the Modern Slavery Act Statement and Vocus’ annual ESG reporting.
- Manage ESG stakeholder reporting and ratings requirements, including GRESB, CDP and Ecovadis, and support customer, tender and market-facing ESG requirements.
- Mature Vocus’ ESG governance framework through materiality, maturity and gap assessments, and by maintaining appropriate policies, controls, metrics and reporting disciplines.
- Lead ESG stakeholder engagement, including Board and Committee materials, shareholder engagement, internal ESG governance forums, and representation in relevant industry, customer and government forums.
- Partner across Vocus, including Network Operations, Procurement, Legal, Risk, Finance, Commercial and People & Culture to embed ESG into business processes, investment decisions and customer outcomes.
- Lead and develop the ESG team, and manage external advisors, program partners and assurance providers.
What you’ll bring to the role
You'll be a strategic ESG leader who combines strong technical expertise with commercial pragmatism, stakeholder influence and a passion for delivering measurable outcomes.
You'll bring:
- Significant experience leading ESG, sustainability or corporate responsibility functions within telecommunications, infrastructure, technology or another complex operational environment.
- Demonstrated success translating ESG strategy into practical roadmaps, measurable outcomes and strong governance frameworks.
- Deep understanding of Australian ESG and climate reporting requirements, frameworks and standards, including ASRS, NGERS, GRESB, CDP and GRI.
- Experience leading climate risk assessments, transition planning, carbon accounting, emissions reduction programs and energy strategies.
- Knowledge of modern slavery due diligence, responsible sourcing, social impact initiatives and sustainable supply chain practices.
- Exceptional stakeholder management and communication skills, with experience engaging at Executive, Board and shareholder level.
- Proven people leadership capability, including leading teams and managing external advisors and assurance providers.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in sustainability, environmental science, engineering, business, law, public policy or a related discipline.
