Primary objective
As a key member of the Territory Pathology team at Alice Springs Hospital, the role contributes to delivering timely, efficient, cost-
effective, and high-quality pathology services to the Department of Health and the public of the Northern Territory.
Context statement
This role acts as the second in charge to the Supervising Scientist in the Medical Microbiology Department. It involves assuming
leadership responsibilities in their absence and ensuring the provision of 24-hour diagnostic, analytical, and advisory services. The
role aligns with CLF6 under the Northern Territory Public Sector Capability and Leadership Framework.
Key duties and responsibilities
Laboratory Analysis: Perform analysis on pathology specimens using a range of technical skills and laboratory equipment to
generate diagnostic reports and provide scientific advice for medical diagnosis. Perform equipment preventative maintenance,
monitor availability of reagents and consumables and order stock and reagents as required
Quality Assurance: Contribute to quality control programs and maintain laboratory equipment to ensure accurate results and
compliance with regulations.
Training and Education: Participate in and deliver training programs for pathology staff and health professionals under the
supervision of the Supervising Scientist.
Compliance: Adhere to service quality standards, and work, health and safety policies to ensure a safe working environment.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Education and Qualifications: A degree in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent is mandatory.
2. Work History: Proven experience in a clinical laboratory, with an in-depth understanding of Medical Microbiology. Ability to
work independently, efficiently analyzing pathology specimens and ensuring proper workflow. Knowledge of quality control,
safe work practices, and quality assurance programs. Knowledge of the requirements for NATA/RCPA accreditation. Ability
to perform preventative maintenance on equipment and monitor consumable inventory.
3. Knowledge and Skills: Commitment to continuous learning and development, with the ability to provide clinical commentary
and authorise pathology results. Ability to assist with the delivery of training to junior pathology staff and other health
professionals.
4. Personal Qualities: Effective interpersonal communication with internal and external clients, providing professional advice
with minimal supervision. Ability to work independently, acknowledge development needs, and show commitment to
professional growth. Willingness to participate in multiskilling and the 24/7 shift roster should this be required due to changes
in future operational demands.
5. Cultural Awareness: Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Desirable
1. Additional qualifications or professional memberships related to Medical Microbiology.
2. At least 5 years of experience in a Medical Microbiology Laboratory.
3. Experience in the use of standard computer applications and laboratory information systems for effective service delivery.
4. Commitment: To developing a career in a regional pathology service.
