The primary purpose of the Senior Resident Medical Officer role is to provide high-quality care to patients in a complex and dynamic clinical environment. SRMOs work primarily within the Emergency Department, with the opportunity to undertake a term in Intensive Care as part of the year.
This year is structured to support doctors intending to apply to the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine and develop the clinical experience and skills required for a career in emergency medicine. The program also supports applicants undertaking an Emergency Medicine Certificate or Diploma and those seeking broader critical care experience.
St Vincent's Hospital Sydney Emergency Department is a high-acuity tertiary referral service seeing approximately 51,000 presentations each year. The department manages a broad range of presentations across all areas of emergency medicine and provides care to a complex and diverse patient population. St Vincent’s is a designated trauma centre and provides advanced tertiary services including ECMO, offering excellent exposure to acute and complex emergency medicine.
SRMOs are supported by a comprehensive education program, with opportunities to contribute to teaching and become involved in coordinating the Emergency Department junior medical officer teaching program. SRMOs who are ACEM members are invited to attend departmental emergency teaching sessions, including preparation for the ACEM Primary Examination.
The EPIC course is delivered monthly and is designed to prepare SRMOs for future critical care training. The program includes sessions in the Simulation Centre, ultrasound teaching, procedural skills training and a dedicated ECG course.
There are also opportunities for secondment, including a Northern Territory placement in Katherine for those seeking broader critical care and rural emergency medicine experience. This placement offers valuable exposure to a unique and varied clinical setting.
The department has a strong focus on education, supervision and wellbeing. SRMOs work within a supportive and collegial team environment, with access to mentoring and opportunities for teaching, simulation and clinical development.
St Vincent’s provides all major adult specialty services on site, with the exception of paediatrics and obstetrics. Patients requiring paediatric or obstetric care who present to the Emergency Department are assessed, stabilised and transferred to the most appropriate service when required.
